Well everybody Im as lost as ever.I really need to replace my gears on my 1997 V6 Toyota tacoma .The problem is Toyota has sooooo many different gear ratios .I need to put in a 4.10 or 4.11 in the rear but I can not find a new set made by anyone.also I do know that I have the newer Tundra style 8" rear.BUT if nobody makes a new set of 4.11 gears for my model truck then what am I left to do?

What size tires do you have? If you have 33" tires, you want 4.56 or 4.88 gears. If you have 35" tires, you want 4.88 or 5.29 gears. The gears with the larger number are better for off-road performance. But since you are a 2WD, you should stick with the gears that will perform best on-road and give the best fuel economy and those are the 4.56 or 4.88.

I'd go with Precision or Richmond gears.

You can order them from http://www.drivetraindirect.com

Hope this helps.

Didn't you already post a thread on this topic or am I crazy? Maybe it was on Pirate...

Anyway, you need to determine if you have a Tacoma 8" (often referred to as the "V6 diff" differential or a T100/Tundra/Non-TRD Tacoma 8" (often referred to erroneously as "8 1/4" or "8.4") There are plenty of 4.11's floating around for either of these diff's, in fact I have a set I would sell you for really cheap as does just about everybody else on the Toyota boards.

As far as determining if 4.11's are right for you ultimatley, you need to figure out what tire size you will run in the end(31"/33"/35"?) and what type of off-road driving you do. I am assumuing since your truck is a 2WD that you are more into desert racing/pre-running. If that's the case I think with 33's and a TRD blower 4.11's will be great, maybe 4.30's. If you want to gain acceleration and don't mind losing a little top-end, get 4.56's but don't go larger than that. If you are going with 31's, then 4.11's are perfect. I assume your truck came stock with small 29" or smaller tires and ~3.33's(?) gears since it's a 2WD mini (non-prerunner).

Right now I have M/T baja claw 31/11.50 baias ply. When those wear out I plan on going with tha same tire only a 33" .That is as large as I will go.I am more for great low end performance rather than top end.The stock tires were 27" .I am having a real hard time determining which particular 8" rear end I have though.Precision gear's website list alot of different ones. Also If I buy a tacoma 8" 3rd member with lets say 4.56 gear will it bolt right into or onto my rear 8" axle?

Since you have a 1997 Tacoma V6 (I am asuming that you have a 4X4 and do not have the rear Diff Lock) then you have the larger Taco 8" (sometimes called the 8.4 or 8.25) If you really want a set of stock 4.10/4.11 gears then go over to the TTORA board (www.ttora.com, or www.TacomaTerritory.com) and click on message board. I know there are tons of guys there that have stock gears collecting dust in their garages... just be sure to ask for non-TRD gears.

Steve,
Me neither, let alone a V6 mini, I think those are somewhat rare. I am guessing they use the "V6" diff since the "non-TRD" would seem overkill.

Blown,
Have you posted on Customtacos.com? Those guys have a section for 2wd performance. I'm sure they will know what you have.

That is what a lot of people call the "non-TRD 8" or the "T100/Tundra 8". If you are certain that you want to stay with 31's then 4.11's will be fine but I'd recommend going with 4.30's or 4.56's if you want to go up to 33's eventually. Otherwise the truck will be somewhat of a dog. Post a wanted add (in the appropriate section) for some gears here and on other forums
