Ok so my 89 4Runner DLX came with only a speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge, and temp gauge.

I was just given a new cluster with all that plus a tachometer, oil gauge, tripometer, and battery gauge.

I know it is a simple plug and play change (Except the oil pressure gauge),
But here's my problem.

My speedo has 188k on it...the new one only has 160k.

Can I swap the odometer? that would be the easiest solution.


If I can't is this alegal thing to do? and what do I tell my insurance when they want to know my mileage at the end of the year...or worse yet if I get in a collision?

I just want everything to be right.

I Had to get a new cluster when I had my Frontier (POS). A "certified" tech had to reset the new odometer ( but still screwed up and put 10000 less miles on it) to the actual mileage but that one was digital. You might be able to have it legitimately done somewhere, but I don't know If the non digi can be reset for sure

I think you can get the dealer to send in the two gauges and set the new one the same as the old.

isn't there some kind of exemption for you? i know in washington, if a car is over 7 or 10 years or so old they don't care about your odometer.

not that mine would matter, there's no hundred thousands place so mine says it's around 16k though it's rolled over 3 times

or just keep write down how much its off by and keep the difference on a piece of paper in the truck. but you should be able to have a dealer adjust it for you. when i had my 99 ford, it had a digital cluster, and it went bad, so i took it in, they got me a new cluster and had it set to the mileage that i had on the truck.

that always cracks me up about old trucks. They guy you buy them from always says "yea, I just turned it over for the first time, she has 110,000 on er." hahaha
