Quick Fix for broken airbox

My buddy noticed my airbox was broke and not sealing properly as his is broke too on his '99 Taco. He has priced a replacement from Toyota at over $300. So now his remains duct taped. Luckier for me, I have access to a donor '99. I yanked the airbox from it today (took about five minutes) and am getting ready to install the '99's. There is quite a big design change between the two, the '98 must have been a weak design as both of ours are broke. The 99 looks much stronger. Hopefully it will be a simple swap.

The break

ok, got em swapped out. Now my check engine light is on. Going to diconnect the battery and see whats up. Hopefully the MAF is good. If not, I may try to use my original. It only took about 10 minutes to put in.

Only one bolt didn't line up. But that may be more to do with my truck.
Installed

i think the MAF sensors are different and, since the 99's sensor is attatched to the airbox, unswappable. it may be possible, but i didn't have the desire to figure it out.

I just noticed that when I tried to swap the MAFs... I have the battery unhooked, I will try that then take it to Autozone for a read. Does anyone know if the 98 can use the 99's MAF.... as far as plugging it in and it should work. The two MAF housings are totally different.

If I take it in to Autozone and it produces a "faulty MAF" and I replace the 99's MAF with a new one... I wonder if it will still not work????

You need to look at a wiring diagram and make sure the MAF connectors for both years have the same wires in the same locations. I have a feeling they might not be, even if the connector is the same.....hence your CEL. Yes, the other option is the MAF might be bad, but I would verify first. Pull the negative terminal to reset the CEL and see if that helps.

Good idea, will look for a diagram. Have epoxy on the way and am going to go look for a temporary cheap ricer cone filter to see if one will fit the 98's maf so I can drive and not get any dirt. The throttle body already had a film of dirt

I picked this up from autozone ($24). It fits on the '98 MAF. It will work until I can figure something else out.

When I put it on and started it, I still got a check engine light. I unhooked the negative battery terminal and now everything is fine. When I had the 99s MAF on, I never disconnected the negative, only the positive. I will try the 99s again tomorrow and see if resetting the ECM will work.

Super Bling

Does the 99 need an airbox? Can I just do this mod of putting a cone on the air hose?? I want to do something like this.. Please let me know. Thanks!

Just remember the cone is more exposed to water splashback into the engine bay so watch puddles and avoid river crossings altogether.

I don't think you would be able to do this on a '99 as the MAF is connected to the airbox. Unless you cut it off at the $300+ box, then you could probably do it. On the '98, it's easy. I would have bought a K&N if I was going to do this for good. Just get one that fits a 3inch.

Personally, I would use a stock airbox. Aside from the water issue... the extra intake noise is annoying... it is a lot louder. sounds like something grinding almost.

If anyone knows more about the MAFs on these two years, please chime in as I am still trying to figure this out. As soon as it warms up I am going to try again.

Buy the K&N FIPK if you want to do that because it has a splash guard for the air filter.
Also know that they are prone to causing the MAF to foul from filter oil when new.

I swapped the 99 back in today, pulled the negative for over half an hour. Still gives a engine light. Just wanted to make for sure. The 99 mass airflow sensor will not work in a 98 as far as I know (for future reference).

I think that guy is using the Supra MAF. I am sure you could get the 99+ to work with yours, but you are going to need to repin because I am pretty sure they are different. Do a search because I seem to remember someone doing this but who it was slips my mind at the moment.
