swap auto with manual

I was just wondering if it was possible to swap an automatic transmission with a manual transmission. In a few years I'm planning on putting in a 3.4L and new transmission in my '91 4Runner when i do my SAS and turn it into a rock crawler. I know there will be alot of cutting and stuff around the floor and that kind of stuff, but if I found a computer from a 3.4L that had a manual transmission, plug that into a 3.4L engine, add a manual transmission along with a Marlin crawler.....would this work out alright? I like the idea of a manual rather than the weaker automatic with big tires and everything. Just an idea.

Sure. Just raid the boneyards for the manual tranny parts. You'll need the brake/clutch pedal assembly, mastercylinder, stainless steel line, clips, brackets, etc. in addition to the obvious stuff. It's not like '91's were never available with a manual so the converssion itself shouldn't be too hard.

cool, i'm collecting parts right now to do the same thing. The only things I still need are the custom harness(I already have the stock 3.4 harness), a good 5-speed(the one I'm getting with the engine needs 2nd and 3rd gear), and a clutch. Other than that, it'll just be small things here and there. Oh yeah, and an exhaust. I do have a question though, can the stock auto crossmember be used with the manual trans.???

Dunno. I think I've heard that you can maybe with a little relocation. I'm sure a simple adapter plate can be fabbed up to go between the crossmember and tranny anyway.

A guy on OffRoad.com did this swap recently. I can't seem to find it now, but it was less than a month ago when I read it. He documented the whole process. The crossmember should be the same for the manual and auto. You may need to get the 3.0 ECU for the manual trans untill you do the 3.4 swap.
Edit: I found the link
http://bbs.off-road.com/ubbthreads/s...ue#Post1262965
I think he bought stuff that wasn't needed, or new, so it could be done for cheaper.
Now my question is can this be done to a double cab Tacoma since they are ALL auto's. I wonder if there are punch outs or spots to put pedals, slave cylinder, etc.

I had my gears changed about 4 months ago and I found out that the stock gears were 4.56 and I upgraded to 4.88's with the 33" MT/R's, but now I wish I had just gone with the 5.29's so I will be all set up for the 37" MT/R's I'm going to get after I do the lift and swap and everything. But anyways, yeah they should be 4.56 I'm pretty sure.

thanks tank

sorry to take you off your question. i found another thread that told you
how to figure it out by lifting the rear wheel and watch how many times the
drive shaft spins. about 4 1/2 times

good luck w/ the swap
