supercharger pulley size

Hey Fellas,

I'm lookin into getting a smaller pulley for my SC and after checking out the URD site I have a couple of questions. I was gonna just get the 2.2 but then I found out they make a 2.1. URD says the 2.1 will give an extra 1-1.5 pound of boost more than the 2.2 but it should be used with 93 octane or higher OR for vehicles at higher altitudes.

So my questions are:

1. Being in colorado I would think I need the 2.1 but they only sell 91 octane(unless I go to the track every time I need to fill up) is this gonna be a problem? (I have no other fuel mods)

2. How can I tell how much boost I'm currently getting? It would be nice to have a reference point before I start spending $ on more boost. Do I have to by a boost gauge to find out?

Thanks,
J

Feel free to chime in with opinions of whether or not a smaller pulley is worth it. My taco is my DD and I need dependability more than HP.(most of the time

one more question: If by putting on a new pulley I get 3 more pounds of boots, how does that equate in HP? and would I need to get it re-tuned?

I guess thats 2 questions...

I think without fuel mods you don't want to increase the boost over stock. The stock fuel system can barely keep up with the baseline amount of boost. Also, if you increase the boost, you would definitely need to get it tuned. Not sure about the octane / altitude thing, but hopefully that will answer a few of your questions.

Yeah, without fuel mods don't go any higher in boost.

What year is your Taco? The newer models have a A/F sensor which helps with fuel adjustment.

You can get your current boost from a boost gauge or a laptop and FTC (part of the fuel mods)

I run a 2.1" pulley with usually less than 92 octane, 91 is about the highest around here without hitting the racing fuel places, but I also have a water/meth injection system and have pulled timing. It is great on high mountain passes, hard to wipe the smile off my face.

My Taco is a '99.

When y'all say I'm gonna need fuel mods what specifically am I gonna need? Is the 7th injector enough or do I also need the 6 injector kit from URD. Or better yet I'm hoping there is a solutuon that doesn't cost $1k. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have all the fuel upgrades from URD but the money tree in my backyard hasn't been watered in awhile.

$125 for a smaller pulley for 3+ pounds more boost was a no brainer, but it seems its to good to be true.

Thanks all your help everyone.

BTW - Mt. Goat, this water/meth system you have sounds intriguing. Might there be a write up for this?

For now, you should just forget about the pulley, you arent going to get the boost without the rest of the system to support it. The major downfall of the supercharger is fuel starvation. You will see for more gains from upgrading the fuel system first and foremost. As far as the kits go form URD you only need one or the other, not both. URD recommends the 7th injector kit for engines in 99 or later years.

Basically without the fuel upgrade kit the best you can do is to keep your fuel system squeaky clean, run as high octane fuel as you can find, keep your air filter clean and be gentle on the accelerator.

Not really any write-up that I've seen, but there are threads on here about them. WI is not a substitute for proper fuel mods, and is going to tap the money tree about the same as fuel mods (for a good system). I was told by URD that WI was necessary for any pulley smaller than 2.2". You being in high elevations can get away with more boost than someone in the low lands, unless of course you drive down out of the mountains and want to hit the boost down here too.

I have posted a few pics of my set-up (Aquamist 2D system) in my 3.4 swap thread: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f160...started-82145/

Here's a few:

The WI injector nozzle is tapped into the red throttle body spacer (only good use for a throttle body spacer BTW)

Double edit: Dale hits it on the head. You can NEVER leave CO! At least w/o going back to the stock pulley and even then you should expect ping and other atrocities of nature.

Having said that:

I think you'll find a 2.2" pulley in CO (Especially in the mountains) will have less issue than a stock pulley at sea level. Of course, conventional wisdom says you need fuel mods at sea level w/ stock pulley. Myself and 3 others (friends of mine, obviously there are more than 3 SC'ed 3.4s in colorado) logged over 100k in combined miles w/ no issues (engine failure, audible ping, etc. note, since no one had audible ping, none of us bothered to run EGT etc).

Once I moved to AZ I had a URD fuel kit on within a month.

As always, YMMV.

(check my signature post, #4, for some math behind the above).

Thanks Fellas,

I probably not be puttin a pulley on til I have the cash for the fuel mods. But it's good to know I could run it if I wanted to be stuck in the state.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
