Super stiff clutch on 96 4runner
Hey all,
just bought ourselves a 96 4runner (I also own an 87) and I'm having trouble with the clutch. The previous owner had taken it in for service complaining of "squeeking". He had the pedal bushings replaced, but sure enough it still squeeks some times. The rear problem however is it takes a very large amount of force to depress the pedal. I'm used to a stiff clutch pedal in my 87 and run a HD clutch in there. But this is far beyond that, and I'm not sure how to address it.
I looked underneath and didn't see any obvious binding. Anyone have some stuff I should check?
Thanks in advance.

I have only driven auto runners before I bought my 5-speed. However I did own a 98 Taco 5speed (3.4 of course) and it was pretty stiff to. Not quite as bad as my runner and since I bought it used with 120k on it I assume its been changed once since it feels so strong right now at 130k.
All I can say is taht my 9 5speed is pretty farkin stiff as well. It doesn't bother me at all since I like stiff clutces and come from a performance background where thats all I had, but its a little peculiar that toyota woudl make a clutch this stiff for the public on a stock runner. So my guess is that it was replaced with a PP a bt stiffer than stock.
As for the squeek, well that happens sometimes. Some grease/lube up agaist all moving parts up there shoudl solve it for a long time. I took out my busching and did the spring deal on the pedal and still get a baby squeek every now and again.

yeah I hear ya, and I am also used to very stiff clutches. My other hobby is autocrossing/roadracing in my classics, which have hellishly stiff clutches. But this just doesn't seem quite right. I was just wondering if there were typical problem areas that cause excess friction to occur.
