I just got a new truck, well not new but net to me...anyway the moonroof opens all the way, and when you close it the window closes half way and stops...you have to release the button and press it again to close all the way.

I have seen this in another 4Runner so I am curious if this is a design or a flaw? I saw something about a safety button, or maybe a safety feature.

My brother works for Chevy and said that their cars do that (Chevys) and need to be re-synchronized, so he suggested I check with the experts on here to see if Yotas need that too.

Anyone know?

What year and model that helps to know what your trying to work with but on my 2nd gen it was the cables needed to be adjusted so if I were you I would check the cables sounds like they need to be adjusted

Mine does that too. Same with my girls Camry. I HATE it, it pisses me off everytime....

It is a FLAWED DESIGN. They told me that it was a safety issue. But when I asked why the windows go up and down without the halfway safety stop point (windows have more of a chance of someone having their extremities getting caught in than a sunroof), they couldn't answer. They fixed this for the 4th Gen's, but we're SOL.

Sorry, 1997 4Runner Limited Edition, 3rd Gen

It has never done it on my 1990 Runner (2nd Gen), but that's just a moonroof. This is a sunroof (back tilts open/up) and a moonroof (opens all the way...love that). There are two switches, one for each feature. I used to detail cars and noticed this on a 4Runner I cleaned often, so I think it's this gen.

And I laughed outloud on your comment. Yeah I find it pretty dangerous in case I am driving with my dog...DINO...riding with his head out the moonroof! I have stupidly got my finger caught in the window though, and my kids too.

No big deal, just want to make sure it isn't something I can adjust or fix.

Sorry but I think there are worse things in life to get mad over rather then being angry that I have to use a microscopic amount of pressure to close my power sunroof by pressing a little button twice.

I know that. I don't mind holding the button down to close it, I just think it's stupid to do it twice. I could understand it stopping half way if it was an automatic (push button, it closes), but only for safety reasons. I always think it myself "Why Toyota? are you really serious?" every time it stops in the middle.

It is a safety feature since the action is there in case the driver is operating it and is looking forward while driving and doesn't see something possibly blocking the window operation. Don't newer 4Runners have a jam sensor on all their windows?

You also gotta remember this country is not full of the brightest peopple and even when they do something that's their fault they still will try to place blame on somebody else so Toyota and any other company that makes any product has to try and dummy proof it as much as possible. Look how many safety/warning stickers there are/is on everything.

The sunroof doesn't have a pinch sensor like the side windows so the stopping half way is a requirement apparently. If they had put the pinch sensor in then they could have made the sunroof auto closing as well.

My favorite all time "safety warning" was a sign on a cloth towel dispenser in a men's room...the kind that give you clean fresh towel as you pull the loop and put the nasty dirty towel section back in the machine.

ive been working on a solution, but without cracking the ecu for the sunroof, ill likely have to do magnetic sensors or pressure switches for an auto close and open. looking forward to designing it though.

dont hold your breath though, its pretty far down my list.

funny part is that my girlfriend with long hair loves the stop half way feature. seems as the roof closes from full open, it sucks the hair up thru it. half closed gives her a chance to pull it back down and avoid it being yanked out of her head.
