So I'm in the middle of the old timing belt replacement in my dads garage and I messed up pretty good. The crankshaft pulley wouldn't come off so I got behind it with a small sledge and took a few one inch swings at it, and did this.




I got it off though.

Sooo... I'm leaning heavily toward running it how it is.

The edges are filed smooth so I don't think it will tear up the belt. The belt actually doesn't even touch that wall of the pulley (at rest - don't know about when its running).

What I am worried about is the balance of the pulley. Is this little chunk missing going to throw the balance off? Seems to me that if someone can crank on all of the tensioners to pull the pulley all different ways with the belts, this little chunk would be insignificant.

If this is a stupid idea, please talk me out of it...

My other options are getting it from the dealer tomorrow for $400 which really isn't an option. If I could spend money like that, the dealer would be doing this for me. I can get one from a salvage yard for $135 on Wednesday which is still more than I want to spend and a lot more time than this rig should be sitting in my dads garage.

You should be fine. If not, go to a junkyard and get a replacement.

Next time, get a repair manual and read it. You can even rent the puller from AutoZone for free.

Id roll that B, instead of $400

I wouldn't That Crankshaft pulley is also the harmonic balancer for the engine. It could lead to much worse problems, like worn crank bearings. Just my 2 cents.

im with OremTacoNut on this one... i guess if i was in a situation that i absolutly needed to be able to run the truck (ex: only form of transportation) then i would.. but i would also hit up the junk yard or get a new one coming pronto..another place to check.. local engine rebuilder.. they may have a junk core motor you might be able to talk them out of the balancer for cheep.

YOU WILL HAVE NO ISSUES AT ALL! IT WILL NOT EFFECT ANYTHING! I PROMISE YOU! Been working on cars for many years and I have done what you have done before. You would have to take a sledge hammer to it in order to effect it. Also, your engine is internally balanced so it will not effect anything.

Worn bearings? From that? That's just ridiculous! Like really.

it won't hurt anything

and heck, if you are worried, file down an equal size piece
opposite of that wound. it will be balanced then. leave more edge,
so make it half as deep and twice as long.

Okay, it is your engine! Do me a favor and look on the back of that pulley. Do you see any spots that are drilled, maybe two or three drilled spots in a single area? That is where they have removed material to balance the pulley. I have had to replace one before on an old truck that I had to cure vibration in the engine!
