Stuffing 35's on a 2nd gen?

Ok, here's the scoop. I want some more girth for my runner. My current set up is just Downey HD springs and a 2" body lift. I should be able to fit 33's with little to no problem but I'm thinking about skipping the 33's and going to 35's. I was thinking about adding 2-1/2" coil spacers and new torsion bars, would that give me enough to clear the 35's or would I need more? Add it all up and it would be: 1.5" downey HD coils, 2.5" spacers and 2" body lift.

You can't simply crank the torsion bars (or get new ones) to clear 35s. New tbars will only give you a horrible ride because 1) you have no additional weight like a bumper and winch 2) you will be riding on your bumpstops which means you will have no rebound travel and your teeth will be rattled out. Plus, your CVs will hate you.

You need to go with a suspension lift that lowers the front diff or otherwise solves the CV angle problems. That's $$$. You will also need to regear otherwise you'll be painfully slow. And since you have to open up the diffs, you might as well add lockers. $$$$$.

Your plan for the back should be fine, I think.

BigBadBlue is running 35s, he'll fill you in on more details.

It is going to depend on wheel width and backspacing.

If you grind out your front fender seam, you might come close to working it.

In the rear, 33's stuff pertty much perfect for me...

There is a guy on ODW who has 35's with only a 1" bodylift, but that was with heavy fender trimming.

If you wheel it, I am doubting that will be enough front lift. The rear may need bumpstop spacers.

Sounds like I could do 35's but it'll be more work than I care to do. I'll be more than happy with 33's. I want to be able to flex so I'll problably go with like1-1/4" spacers just for good measure and I can crank t-bars if i have to. Thanks for the replys

If you want flex, do not crank the torsion bars at all.

Avoid aftermarket bars unless you have a seriously heavy front end.

Used to be a guy from Arizona who ran 35's with a 3" bodylift and some serious fender adjusting.

I plan on getting a nice winch bumper in the future (same one seafarinman has) so I'll wait on the torsion bars till then.

Doink, I think there's a couple of guys here on the board selling some check around. Other than that I found some 1-1/4" daystars for like $80 but I dont have the site on this computer.

I am a believer in building up a rig to fit bigger tires. Some of the Toy owners on this board believe in "hacking" away on their Toy to "stuff" their tires under their Toy. IMO a rig should not be hacked up to make something fit. Thats like using a claw hammer instead of a simple screw driver to remove a part. Save your trucks body panels/parts and buy the correct tools for the job instead of sawz all saws,claw hammers, and chisell sets. :beaver:

Heh, I'm one of the guys who believes in keeping the CG as low as possible. I figure it's better to hack up the truck a little to reduce the chance of flopping, plus it's safer on the road. A lot of guys are even anti exocage because of that. It's really not that much hacking to fit 33s, or even 35s (according to that one guy on 4x4wire anyway). I've seen trucks that have done the hacking to fit 33s and I can barely tell it's been hacked, it's really minor.

I'd be more afraid of breaking CVs with 35s though. Roger Brown doesn't even have 35s, yet. He's using 33s right now.

Anyway, it's just 2 schools of thought.

I am willing to bet that my hack job is almost as wide with comparable ground clearance and 7 inches lower.

If my IFS flexed, it would be even more stable, but it is pretty darn low and wide at this point.

My theory is to get what is in the way out of the way. Grinders and big hammer work well for that. Does my truck look hacked? Please!

None of this was meant as a personal attack, only to get some points across. I think that some good can come out of this thread. Most people have to look at my truck and ask what if any lift I have to fit 33's because it doesn't look hacked.

Steve, I am from that same school. Not a graduate yet, but hopefully getting close.

I just did 3" body lift, 3"spacers and cranked the t-bars 1" (not all the way) and i put 33's on to fit just perfect. Your runner will be badass with 33's, 35's and a hell of a lot more work will be extra badass. I will post some pics tomorrow

there is no way you can have stock gears and 35s, its just unsafe going that slow. 33s is bareable. so your gonna have to get gears if you want 35s. the cheapest safe way to get 35s in my opinion would be to get a 4" suspension and then cut the fenders out a little. if you get bushwackers or some other flares you get way more clearance and the are clean lookin

Nice to here from a fellow Washington Stater. I had a 4" Tough Country suspension lift sitting on 35" TXR tires & 15X10s. I had not re-geared to compensate but I got by. What do you mean by running 35's and not re-gearing as being unsafe? I have since lifted my body 3"s with a 4Crawler kit. I still need to re-gear but its not on the top of my list of priorities yet. Where is Sammamish again? We should meet up somewhere and wheel sometime. Ben
