It doesn't get windy around here often, but when it does I hear strange high-pitched sound that sounds like it's near the firewall. The sound will either come from two places, either on the far right or the far left. I have never heard it come from anywhere in between. Also, if it is not windy but I am going around 75 - 80 mph, I will hear the sound again, but this time it isn't as loud. The only thing I can think of is that air is somehow getting through from the front of my 4Runner which is causing the sound. I do not know what to do let alone fix it and at this point I am guessing that wind is coming in. This seldom happens because it is not always windy and I do not go 80 mph all the time but you can imagine how annoying it is. Anyone have any ideas?

MMMMhhh. I am thinking it is a rubber gasket from your firewall, Probably the one that goes on the steering column tends to wear out.

i am also thinking look around the firewall for bad gaskets or holes.... my truck is notorious for this and there is a huge 1" hole where my speedo cable goes... well the cable grommet is jacked up and i know air gets through right there..... there are tons of holes and plugs and gromments and wires in the firewall

anotehr thing i thought of, the doors... that would be very left and right side, near your ears, and would sound liek its coming from the front of the vehicle.... my doors make mad howling noises the faster i go

I don't wanna take it to a shop because I know they'll screw me over. How would I go about fixing it then? I'm gonna focus on the doors first since that where it "sounds" like it's coming from, but of course I might be wrong. So, should I just patch up any holes I see if I open/remove the doors? What should I use to patch it up?

do you have "vent visors" over your windows? If so check around them and make sure there no gap anywhere between the plastic and the door. I had this problem and I found a small gap that air was going through, use a little chalk or something and seal it off. Worked for me

Yea I do, it's the kind that sticks on, not the ones that fit in. I never thought about that, I really hope that's the problem because that's an easy fix. Thanks a lot.

Just a quick update here, I still have have this problem (never tried to fix it yet). I stopped by Toyota's service center and told one of the guys what the problem is. I explained to him that I hear an intermittent high pitched noise (sounds like it's coming right in front of me on driver side only) when driving over 70 mph or when it's windy. I also told him the noise completely disappears when I roll down my windows (something I recently found out).

He said that it's most likely something to do with my air vents not being sealed properly. He also said next time I'm driving I should close the air vents and check to see if that fixes it.

What do you guys think about his advice? Also, if he's right, how would I go about checking the seals? I'm assuming I have to take apart the dash.
