Just for kicks I stopped in today at a 4x4 shop that I drive past often. I told them that I'd been wanting to go to 33 inch tires for a while and they said I'd need atleast 4 inches of lift. I asked them "are you sure I need that much? I'm already on 31's and they seem almost big enough for 33's." They told me how they've been in the buisness for 30 years and that if they say it'll take 4 inches I can rest assured it will take 4 inches.

Ummm... ok whatever.

I also asked them how much they wanted for a Westin safari bar and they said it'd be $375. I'm not sure if that price is fair or not, but it seems pretty high.

Oh yeah, and that 4 inches of lift was going to cost me $1200 for the kit plus installation. A 2 inch body list would be 600 pluss installation.

How do people afford to go to places like this?

Because they stop here at yotatech first. The other poor saps... well... I don't know...

For 33's lift isn't the only way to fit them. Cut out flares can help and there are different lift type options (ie: spacers/ add-a-leafs).

Some places really try to gouge you for money.

As far as the bar, I believe my dad got his for 349 and installed it himself.

I asked the dealer about adjusting the clutch start cancel switch on my '00 5-speed while I was talking to them about some other work and the "professional" said, and I quote, "they're adjustable?".
Thank goodness I got the scoop here first. I will do it myself when things thaw out around here.

PS. Of course he also told me that warped rotors would not cause any kind of premature ABS lock up either.

All the stories I read on here plus my experiences in life have made me paranoid about letting people work on my vehicles. I'm not too mechanically inclined though, so that leaves me in a crappy position.

4x4 shops in general piss me off. I go in there and they have nothing for a toyota on the shelf--not even pics to show me. Everything must be special oredered, and I have to pay for the shipping.
Then when I tell them what I want they look at me like I am the ignorant one--since when do f250's on 44's make the best 4x4s??

breaker, I can get Superlift kits pretty cheap if you want to go that route....4-5". But there are many options to fit 33's under a yota.

There wasn't really a question there... just an observation. Maybe it's been "beaten to death", but I thought it was an interesting story. You could have just ignored the post and it'd drop down to the bottom of the list, but now it'll stay at the top.

Thanks for the offer on the cheap lift, but I don't really think I need it. I've still got almost 50% tread right now and when I get new tires I will probably squeeze on 33's and regear all at the same time.

Not everyone looks back a year or two when they just want to discuss an experience they had today. Now if he was directly asking "how much lift for 33's", and that was all that was in the post, then yes, i would hope he would search for that.

That said, most 4x4 shops are for the hardcore pavement pounders. They told my friend he would need at least 5" of lift to fit 31's They make enough money selling chrome shocks and body lifts that they dont need to cater to the people who actually use their 4x4. Mostly they sell to those that need to compensate for something. At least thats what it seems like arround here.

The only thing i use them for is collecting ford shock towers. When the customer wants 4 chrome shocks on each wheel, they just throw out the old shock towers. I told one shop in town to hang on to them and i would give them $2 each for every one they save me. Works well for me, even though i dont know what to do with all of them.

that's cool breaker. Cheap, let's say....$850 compared to the $1200 you'd pay at a 4x4 shop. I guess $850 dollars isn't cheap, but it beats the $1300 that a shop quoted me.

850 is way cheeper than 1200. If I ever go that route I'll be sure to track ya down. Would the source you get your superlift kits from also have good deals on some smaller kits. I might eventually go with a 2 inch suspension or body lift depending on what'd be easier for me to do here in my backyard.

Either way it will be a while before I've got the funds for anything major.

Jazz it up here in denver is pretty cool. Especially the new one, run by the son of the original owner.

He drives an 84 toyota with a flat bed and 35's. I started talking toyotas, and he actually has some things that I want, namely the huskyliner floormats.
