I have been hearing about photo radar for a long, long time, but
have yet to actually see one. Not much of a worry down here in
Houston, TX.

These are all over the DC area. Big Brother is watching.
What sucks is that it is very difficult to defend yourself, since you can't question the camera. The whole issue is just revenue generation, companies and politicians who believe that citizens are nothing more than a source of income.

They have been doing the photo radar in london for a few years now. Ppl have tried all kinds of scams to defeet the cam. Things like hair spray on the plate to plastic wrap. Even if the image is hard to see they just take the pic of the plate and make a negative copy of it and the plate number shows up.

The state police here in Ct. run photo almost exclusively. I have not seen a regular radar or lazer alert from my detector in a long time. I would love to know if that thing actually works.

I believe they are talking about the cameras at intersections that photograph you if you are in the intersection when the light turns red.

This works with sensors and timers and at a certain point the camera starts flashing pictures if it senses a car crossing the line after a predetermined time. You get a nice portrait of your mug behind the wheel with a bill for $271 (at least here in So Cal).

They are some picture taking fools over here in the UK. The camera's are everywhere!! You'll be cruising along, see a flash and a few weeks later a ticket shows up in the mail. I haven't been pinched yet(knock on wood) but several of my buddies have. Luckily the locals know where they all are so if your following someone and they jam on the brakes or slow down for no apparent reason at all you better too!

hm. Mythbusters did a shpeel about those kind of things. All of them failed except for the rocket powered car which went faster than the shudder speed of the camera. The camera basically couldn't catch the rocket car in action..so ya....
IMO Waste of money. Plus, if they take a picture of you anyways and see its blocked, I'm sure there are some consequences. But how will they know its you, huh?

just wanted to mention that it has been reported that near some high schools- the kids make a "fake" license plate -perhaps of their teachers car and then create a traffic infraction in their own car with the fake tag visible.

Thus the teacher gets a ticket for a car they don't even own-but has their license plate on it....which does not match the car issued to...thus even more headaches...

Yup, love it (kids making fake plates...)

(now that the thread is revived...)

Dallas area installed a bunch of red-light cameras and then later started disabling them -- they weren't profitable (people were actually obeying the red lights).

I thought they were put up in the name of safety? When does safety equipment have to turn a profit?

This whole thread should have been deleted back in 2002 since YT rules specifically prohibit condoning illegal activities.

However, i think we have a new record for the oldest thread revival in history.

Back in the late 90's, in Fort Collins, I got three of those camera tickets, $120.00 each. I went to the court date and asked to see the PMI's (periodic maintenence inspections). When the court didn't haven them on hand, I asked how do they know that the doppler radar is giving accurate readings. I then gave a background of my past Air Force training on doppler radar and how I calibrated systems like these. The judge looked at me kinda funny like he knew he was beat and charged me 40.00 for court fees and no points on my license. I win !!

Photo radar is just a government cash grab! The person who is driving doesn't get any repercussions for driving over the speed limit...you get a ticket in the mail to the registered owner...so really....you aren't getting any demerits on your license "cause they can't confirm who was driving" So really....its just a money maker in the end....replying to an old post I know
