well the chart said they're 4.875. Is that a big difference gear wise from 4.88's? i wouldn't think so but i'm no mechanic

that is a 4.88 ratio. using only 2 digits on the right side of the decimal, the 5 makes the 7 round up to an 8 resulting in 4.88.

from the 4x4 wire board - drivetrain specs

G = 8" diff
29 = 4.10 gears
4 = 4-pinion diff

most likely on a heavy truck or something. no way you're going to be able to make a 7.xx gear run on an 8" diff. maybe something like a dyna or other big truck like that could have them available

Do you have an auto or 5 speed? 5.29 works much better with 33's if you have the auto tranny. The OD gear on the auto is higher than 5th gear on the 5 speed.

I'm actually not even sure what kind of gears I have but I figured that since I had 31's on the truck when I got it that I have 4.88's on there...I'll check the stuff on my door panel when I get home to be sure.

Thanks,

Fink

Fink, my truck came with the factory 31 inch tire package too and 4.88 gears. 31's with the 4.88 are about the same as 33's with 5.29, both however are geared too high IMHO.

The best set-up I have run was 33's with 5.71 gears with the auto tranny. With that set-up the 3.0 could pull the OD gear quite nicely in the 65-85 mph range. The only problem was the 5.71 gears didn't hold up more that about 40K miles for me. So I'm running 5.29's now.

Currently have 35s & an auto trans. Jumping it up to 5.29s from the 4.10s. Should be a lot quicker shouldn't it?

Chitty GM in town & very sluggish unless I step on the right pedal. In the hills its ok but will be so much sweet with my 5.29s & locker. Cant wait!

Nah its just a worthless button to me. Now the ECT button and me get along real well. It just thinks its funny to watch my gas guage drop like Martha Sterwart stocks. Please let my 5.29s get here tomorrow. I am getting impatient with all this talk of gearing.

i went to an offroad shop and the guy said he's seen some broken rear ends with 5.29 gears. he recommended 4.88 for 33's. although the peps on this forum haven't seemed to have had any problems with 5.29s

33's and stock 4.88's for 4 months or so now. I ran 32's for 85-90K miles with no problems. Although, MY 3.0 is a real powerhouse . It does just fine and its purty hilly here.

Did he tell you they were all broken rears on toys or rigs in general. I would imagine it comes down to what kind of rig, engine size, how modified the eng. is, & size of tires. Dont most gear sales companies have lifetime warranty's on their gears?
