Thumbs down Stinky Transmission

I have a 96-Tacoma V6 4WD manual transmission. It has 178,000 miles. I have had an issue since 75K that when I travel over 60mpg in 4WD I get a burning smell. I took it to the dealer and they have said that they can't reproduce it. Antone else have this issue?

Couple of questions

60 mpg or mph?

Why 60 mph in 4 wheel drive? If the conditions are bad enough for 4 wheel drive 60 is probably a little fast.

Does it only do it in 4wheel drive?

Is it a burning smell or sulfur smell?

It usually is between passes where there is still some amount of snow on the road. The book says you can go 103MPH in 4WD. It is more of a burning smell, not the sulphur smell I get from bad gas

A: Don't do this.
B: Since you've ignored (A), does it smell like burning tire or burning oil?
C: If its burning tire, then see (A) above.
D: If its burning oil, then see (A) above.

I think you misread. It says don't go above 103 in 4th GEAR.

You are not supposed to exceed 50mph in 4WD.... And why would you be doing 60mph (or more) in snowy mountain passes? Even if you have 4wd.

Make sure if you ever use 4low not to exceed 20-25mph or else KABOOM! good bye transmission
