still leaking after inner axel seal replacement.
ok, so i have replaced this seal a couple times in the last few weeks. both times it has started leaking again. i am at my witts end with this. One thing that happened to me when i replaced the original one was my seal puller nicked the inside of the axel housing, right on the corner of the 45 degree angle where the seal surface opens up to the abs ring surface. its more on the angled surface and not the seal surface (see picture). not sure if this is my problem, maybe a burr on that little nic damaging the seal going in. Both seals sat nicely and the breather has been cleaned out. The bearing and outter seal were not replaced.

Damn, heavy duty seals!? I wish I would have know that before, it might help.
Unfortunatly your 2000 may have other issues. Have your axles been upgraded????

2000 4runner axles were flawed from the factory, unless you replace everthing and do the upgrade, they will continue to leak. However it sounds like you have a more immediate problem. I don't think it is the nick in the tube. I don't think it's a bent axle shaft, unless you had an accident. Is your breather clear and functioning properly??
I think it's safe to say that JUST replacing the seal is only a temp fix. The RIGHT way on a 2000 is to upgrade every thing. The RIGHT way on all others and upgraded 2000's is to replace the bearing, (bearing case also if needed), both seals AND check the breather!!!!
LEAKING AXLE SEALS ARE A PLAGUE IN THESE 4RUNNERS!

MArlin Crawler did not seem to have anything special for vehicles with ABS. It says OEM on their description and no picture. Am I missing something? I would like to find out because I need to replace the passenger side seal. Thanks.

Saw your sceen name and just figured..... going too fast.
I'd still check to see if there is any slack in the bearing case. (I'm not sure how much yours differs from mine). Any slack or roughness could cause the seal to fail.
Any other symptoms with the rear end?
Maybe try a differnt brand of seals?
Are you freezing the seal before you put it in the axle tube?

oh man. i forgot the HD axle seals arnt for an ABS axle.. crappy.. sorry
also good call J-ball on the breather.. if it is clogged that will cause your axle seals to blow.

same thing happend to mine and i also have a 2000. Turns out the bearings were bad which caused the seals to go bad. I endded up replacing everthing (bearings, inner/outer seals). I might be missing something else too, but I think total in parts was less then $200.
