Steering shaft joint protector necessary?

On the steering shaft, there is a plastic housing that fits over the top of the joint. Is that thing really necessary? I think it might be part of the cause of my hard steering. I havn't checked yet if it is rubbing on the firewall, but if it is and I take it off, what could be some complications besides debris getting stuck in there. I have a 3in BL and custom gap guards that pretty well cover it. Does anyone else run without this thing?
