Whenever I'm in my car about to start the car or take the key out of the ignition, I always have to deal with a somewhat strong static charge from the ignition or any other ground on my car. I thought it might be a short somewhere in the electrical system but I'm not too sure. If anybody can help me out.

hold on to any metal part of your vehicle when getting off your Toyota.

Maybe you need a grounding strap? like you see on some cars. One of those ones that drags behind you to cut down on static electricity.

The weird thing is that I have leather interior and it only happens to me with cars that have cloth interior, maybe its just me.

So its just not me? EVERYTIME I get out of the car, and go to close the door.... ***ZAP***. Its not a big deal but it just pisses me off!

Nope, not just you. It happened since I owned my '90 and also with my '00. Both have cloth seats. After 16 years you get used to it, I guess.

yea i just get used to it. sometimes i forget and im like, DOH!

its funny too, because my passengers never seem to get shocked....no expert here, but im assuming it has to do with the fact that im touching the metal key?

happens to me too. i thought it was my ground wires since i have so many of them but i guess it happens to everyone also.

I just get out and when I need to touch something metal I just punch it, that way the pain from the hit takes your mind off the annoying shock...OK, so I don't really do that, I just grab the metal around the window when I get out and its kind of hit or miss.

Use your knuckles to touch a metal surface (you have less nerves there so a shock doesn't hurt as much.....used to happen to me back in AZ all the time). You are much less likely to have that happen in humid climates because the moisture will dissipate static charge. The air does become drier during winter because cold air won't hold as much moisture as warm air so you may only get static in winter where you live. I don't get it at all up here except on rare occasions.

I second using the knuckles. I've done it for so long now, it is habit to touch my knuckle to metal as I get out...

Well, it is winter in CA and it was dry when I experienced all the static charge, now its raining, and so far haven't been "shocked"

I have two 4Runners with cloth seats.
The 99 zaps me all the time when I get out, but the 97 never shocks me.

Weird?

I thought it was just a bad ground somewhere, but maybe it is static...
Time for an on-board humidifier!
