Starting problem

Good Afternoon, I am having trouble with my 99 v6 2wd.

When I go to start it, and turn the key it gives one click and all of the electronics turn on but not the engine (This is regardless of time of day or temperature outside). I repeat this for about 10-30 times and finally it slowly turns over and starts. I replaced the OEM battery and the battery terminal and now they both show 12.8 volts on a voltmeter. I am still having the problem. My next guess is that I have a dead spot on my starter. sometimes I only have to turn my key once and it starts, other times it can be 3 times or as described above, 10-30 times...it is a weird problem. I am looking to my fellow forum posters for advice. I am not the most mechanically saavy. Any advice you can give me would be great. oh the truck has about 68,000 miles on it. I know I have a bad o2 sensor that I need to fix as well.

Thanks in advance!

Please do a search on this, it has been covered hundreds of times. That said, it is most likely a problem with your starter contacts; a $20 fix if you do it yourself.

Please do a search, and then take a look at Roger Brown's site for more info and parts.

thanks, I searched intitally and must have misspelled cuz I found stuff unrelated to my problem, then re-searched after posting and foudn the info I was looking for, unfortunately I don't have the tools to remove the starter or replace the contacts. mainly the extnsions and jack stands. How much you think a mechanic would charge to replace the contacts? Typically how long should the stock starter last?

Toyotas starters in general can outlast the vehicle. However, starter contacts, as you already know, is a weak point.
Mechanic, if you will be able to find one that agrees to change contacts only, will probably charge you 2-3 hours of labor.
