starting after head gasket change

hey all i finally got my engine back together and am now trying to start it.
well there is a problem.... when i try to start it, it cranks over but has loud popping noises coming from the exhaust (this is when it is trying to start becuase it will not run yet becuase i think the battery is shot beyond all hope)

any help would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.

btw. its a 1986 toyota 4-runner 5sp. with a 22-re engine.

Your timing is way off. Did you get the Timing Chain/Belt on properly.

Sounds like the timing may be way off.

Timing is probably way off, or if you had the distributor out it may be 180 degrees out, ie firing on the exhaust stroke, BTDT myself.

ok ,
when i took the head in to get the valve job, and other stuff, the mechanic siad that he set the correct timing on the head and all i had to do was put the #1 piston at TDC which i did... so the timing SHOULD be correct.
now that you mention the distributor, i didnt really mark where it was or anything and i basically just stuck it in (probably pretty dumb now that i think about it). so how do i go about setting the correct timing and setting the dist. correctly when it wont even run?

thanks alot guys

pull plug one and set it to tdc again... take the rotor cap off and put the rotor at a 45* angle facing the front of the truck.... put the cap on..... if you have a manual (fsm) or haynes or chiltons, there is a picture of this

Make sure #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke, both valves should be closed. If you put your finger over the plug hole you will feel the compression. The piston could be at TDC on the exhaust stroke, then you wouldn't feel compression, and the exhaust valve will be open.

Then remove the distributor and replace it with the rotor lined up with #1 terminal. Rotors usually rotate when the distributor is inserted so this may take a few tries.

ok made suggested changes ( i believe correctly). and put new gas in it ans a new battery.

so here is what goes down NOW!:
it doesnt back fire anymore so that means that the timing is more correct than it was before and it does START but will die immediatly after no matter how much gas i give it.

any suggestions?

Is all the air intake plumbing put together? If the intake isn't completely installed with no leaks the AFM will either not work at all or will send data that is incorrect and the ECU will have no clue what to do and the engine will not run.
Check and make sure the AFM and TPS and all that sort of stuff are plugged in as well.
I'm just pulling the trigger and hoping to hit something

both harnesses (tps and afm) are connected. and fine.
i think some of the vac hoses are connected wrong or something.

is there a hose diagram for the 22-re somewhere?
im talking about a complete one that has all vaccuum lines and every hose on the engine.
