Starter Won't Quit

This just happened and I am clueless to what caused it.

I went out to leave and I started the car and it cranked fine but when it fired the starter did NOT stop so I turned the key off. The Engine turned off but then it started to crank again but never fired. This happened for a good 30 sec then just quit.

The contacts inside your starter are sticking due to corrosion. They will need to be replaced. Parts are about $15.

x2 on the contacts the reason it did not fire is because the solenoid did not engage after you turned the key off. If the starter ran long it may have messed the starter up even more. My advice = carquest-new starter.

It's either the contacts, or the bendix sticking. I've seen both before. My dad's cruiser for instance. He went out to start it, and the starter kept spinning after the motor was going. He turned the key off and it kept going. So he had to disconnect the battery. We ended up replacing the whole thing that time.

I've been through several starters on my 4runner, because of the lifetime warranty at the place where I bought them, I just turned the old one in. But almost every time it was the contacts that had worn down or corroded. My warranty this time is just a year so I'll be replacing them instead of getting a new unit the next time it goes out.

I'd HIGHLY NOT reccomend a new starter. Parts store starters are JUNK. The stock denso starter is the best unit you can get for your truck. Remove your old starter and I'm sure its just the plunger sticking to the contacts. Replace the contacts and/or the plunger and you'll be good to go.

Carquest around here sells denso parts.

my starters from autozone always last two years. through the first winter, they are fine. when they hit their second winter (temps below 40) they always start to run-on. I'm on my third one. Warranty exchange every time = FREE.
