hi. i think i have a starter problem. my truck will 'click' when i try to start and will just randomly start up eventually. the battery is OK and some of the people i asked say to replace the starter. i was wondering if anyone has done a rebuild on their starter that is the same or similar to the one in a 1998 PreRunner V6. or is there something more simple to try first. i am very mechanically inclined, but i haven't worked on my own car except tinkering. any help is much appreciated. thanks!

Welcome to YT ..... its sounds like the starter contacts to me there real easy to replace and is cheaper than a new starter

Yep, replacing the contacts is very easy. The only hard part is squeezing the starter out of its position. See Roger Brown(4Crawler) for the new contacts.

it took us a while to get the starter out, but the rebuild was really easy. thanks to the article mentioned here and some other resources on the net. here's a pic of the contacts that have plagued me for a while:
