Yep, back then, Toyota must have had better mechanical engineers than electrical engineers.
The 1989 truck should already have the starter relay. All one need to do is simple rewire as explained on my write-up.

Most welcome. The good thing about DIY is we learn our trucks better so we're not relying on others, we know it's done right, and someone said that "having someone else work on your truck is like having someone else work on your woman and having to pay him for it" - LOL!

Check for the cable connection there may be any loose connection or missing contact in the back terminal nut...
