sr5 pickups

I am looking for a really cheap vehicle for the winter. I saw an 84 4x4 pickup and a 86sr5 both around the same price. I cannot seem to find anything outlining the various changes through generations of pickups like the one on 4runner's. does one exist somewhere someone can point me to?

Don't the 84's have solid axle while the 86 has the IFS?

The 84 will be carburated while the 86 is probably fuel injected.

Well the differences that I know about are...

1984- Solid axle up front, could be either carbureted or fuel injected, the grill is different, the hood slopes downward more, the bed has a recess just below the top line of the bed.

1986- Independent front suspension up front, could be either carbed or fuel injected, but most likely fuel injected (22r is carb'd, 22re is fuel injected and 22re-t is fuel injected turbo charged), new grill, new body lines, more square this time, the truck bed is known for rusty bed syndrome, rust usually develops right at the crease seperating the top and bottom sections of truck, they didn't waterseal the bed correctly when they welded it all up.

That's everything I know as far as differences.

Definately go for the 84. If you ever do modifications.... you'll be happy you have it.

the 84 4x4s don't have the little recess(where the tie downs are) on the bed, they all had the smooth beds like later years iirc

the only problem with 84 and 85 trucks is that they have cheap steel in their beds(there was a high tariff those years i think) and they rust rather easily

personally, i would go with the 84, since it has a solid axle, and easier to do mods on. id rather actually have a carburetor, simpler and no wires(on mine anyway). slap a weber on it and call it good!
