squealing sound?

I have only had my 1999 sr-5 v6 for about a month so I am new here. I am hoping someone can help me with this problem. In the last couple of weeks I have noticed a sqealing sound (similar to a loose fan belt noise). But it only hapens when i take my foot off the gas pedal. If i give it gas, even a little, it goes away. The only other time i notice it is when it is warming up , it almost seems to cut in and out every few (maybe ten or so) seconds. I had a look at the fan belts and they look ok, tension seems ok and not worn. When i talked to my toyota service dept. he guessed maybe it was an air leak, although he didn't come out and listen to it. So I tightened up the clamps on the air intake but the sound is still there. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Thank You and have a Happy New Year.

Welcome to the forum, sounds like you covered all of the basics. Try this, do you still get the sound when you press the gas pedal with the engine off? I had a break squel that turned out to be the pedal linkage once. Hope this helps.

Do you by any chance smell anti-freeze while driving or when you open the hood? Because I had a similar thing happen with my 4Runner a while ago. I would be driving around town and when I would take my foot off the gas pedal I got a weird "squeeling" noise and also had a kind of tapping noise (not knocking, just a really like tap sound). And whenever I opened the hood I smelled a little anti-freeze. It turned out that I had a small crack in my radiator and when I would accelerate it would shoot a small stream of coolant onto the fan (hence the ticking sound, my mechanic described it as a baseball card in a bicycle tire) and the squeeling sound I had was the coolant coming out of the radiator. So long story short I figured it out because I was going to the mall to visit my girlfriend at work, I get out and I smell a little anti-freeze, and when I come out I drive home and about a mile from my house my truck starts overheating, and right as I'm in my drive way my truck dies. I guess I drove it too far with that leak and something ruptured or something and I lost just about all my anti-freeze.

So I had to end up getting a new radiator.

I don't know if this is the same type of thing that you're experiencing, but it sounds kind of similar to what happened to me.

Good luck with it and welcome to the forum

more info

My truck is an automatic and the anti freeze hasn't gone down. The sound definately is only when the engine is running. Thanks for the suggestions anyways. Let me know if anyone can think of any others.

An easy test is to spray some WD-40 on your belts. If the squeeling goes away, you know its your belts. I have some squeeling belts that sounds similiar to your problem, I just haven't had a chance to replace them yet.

I am having the same problem as Waycan. I hear a squeel when letting off the gas until the pedal comes to rest in it's place. Thie happened this morning and stopped after about 1 mile after starting her. So I guess it goes away when shes warmed up.

Any ideas??

did you try the wd40? start there, mine use to do that and i had all the belts changed when i did the t-belt. FIXED. before i had it fixed, i just sprayed crc belt sqeak and it lasted a while.

try the wd40 or pick up some break quiet and try it.
