Speedometer not working

I have a '96 4runner and my speedometer stopped working just out of nowhere. Does anyone know what this could be from.

could be the speedometer cable. I had to have a new one on a 95. It started making a lot of noise and the needle was not accurate. The top of the original cable was actually bent. Cost about $125 to have a new one installed.

I recently had to replace the speedometer when mine quit. Cost $450.
