Speedo needle is bouncing

On my 92 4runner the Speedo needle is bouncing at all speeds. At low speeds not very noticeable. At high way speeds is jumps 1-4 mph ?

Any clues?

Speedo cable. $75. Pain in de butt to install. Then the speedometer will start makin' noise. Haven't solved that one yet.

Not sure what year these went to electronic vs. cable. I know mine is electronic on my 93. If it's a cable, you can try lubricating the cable. If it's electronic, either the speed sensor on the trans is going bad or the speedo head is going bad. My speedo head was replaced at 41K.

They're electronic only if it's a auto tranny and I think the year was '92. Manual trannies still had a regular cable.

It is a 1991 automatic with a cable.

Could I use graphite or some sort of lube for the cable ?

My 1st Gen Runner bounces and smoothes out above 35 or so.

where would one lub the cable @? the part that goes into the speedo or on the tranny side?

That's easy to do until you get the "wa, wa, wa" sound with every bounce of the needle (or worse - the squeal) to go along with the bounce, like I do in cold temps.

Haven't tried lubing it, but my guess would be to go from the dash end to allow for gravity to do it's work towards the tranny.

You have to take the dash apart to change or lube it. I just did it on my 90 pickup, what a pain. If you don't lube or replace it it can peg the needle and break it off like it did on my last 90 pickup.

$75.00 and about 2 hours labor was worth it for the quiet and peace of mind.

Good luck!

Make sure your hubs are not locked. Mine bounced like crazy when a dopey friend thought it would be funny to lock my hubs and not tell me. Another problem could be the connection to the transfer case. If it is coroded, you can get poor signal.

Ok, here's what I did, it works great.
1) pull dash cover off over cluster about 4 screws
2) remove cluster (4 screws 3 wire connections and speedo cable)
3) disconect the speedo cable at the transfer case
4) get a cordless drill with a variable speed
5)you can pull the inner cable out slightly about 1/2 inch
6) hold the cable with the cup/end pointing up.
7)pour about 5 or 6 drops of heavy oil into the cup ( I used heavy bicycle chain lube "Phills Tenacious Lube" NOT the white lightning kind but petroleum based)
8) take your cordless drill and gently tighten the chuck down on the inner cable
9) run the drill at a medium slow speed while slightly pushing and pulling about 1/2 to 1 inch for about 30 to 45 seconds to work the lube down into the cable.
9.5) you could put a couple more drops of oil if you need it, but too much will cause it to spill back into the speedo head.
10) reinstall

took me about 30 minutes and was free has been working for 2 years now

On my 91 I started with the cable... same noise, same bounce. Replaced speedo and all is well!! Started at 185,000 miles. Speedo head was $125 from my dealer. Good Luck!
