speedo cable help

THE EVENT
My speedometer quit working today without warning... the first time it quit working it made an aweful sound for about a week. this time it broke right at the point where the speedometer cable it screws into the tranny.

THE DILEMMA
Every auto parts store i've been to does not carry such a piece. the cable for an 82 pickup (which they do carry) looks like the one i replaced a year ago. and with the measurement (90") which also seems right.

THE RAGE
Of COURSE! Toyota has the piece i need for some $85 plus tax.
The one at Shucks was more like $15 including tax.
booo-
which brings me to...

MY QUESTION
What should i do? Where perhaps can i find a replacement cable for less? it just seems like WAY too much to pay. I used a very generic looking cable the first time i replaced it. it didn't seem to fit perfectly , but it worked until i recently replaced my clutch.

oh well....

please advise

Do the generic inner cable replacements that you cut and crimp work well?
