I'm not sure what to think. When the 4Runner decided to automatically lock my keys in the car, and AAA used a slim jim to lift up the door lock, the alarm immediately went off before the door was even opened. I discovered today that even with the factory alarm set, I CAN unlock the door with the key without setting the alarm off.
Please forgive me, this 4Runner is new to me. I'm diligently pursuing the purchase of an owner's manual on ebay. lol

the transponder key is only meant for your ignition not your alarm. so opening your door a regular key even though you have a transponder wont affect your alarm it just wont start the car.

1996-2002 4Runner LIMITED models have the transponder keys that MUST be programmed just like the remotes if they are replaced or added.
a regular key will open the doors and even turn the ignition, but the engine will not fire unless it recognizes a code from an authorized transponder key next to the ignition.

The transponder keys plastic heads are thinker than the normal ones, so if you go to the local hardware store to get a second key and yours is way thinker than the blank they want to use, you'll likely have trouble.
