Question Speaker Sizes in 3rd Gen.

Don't have the rig yet but I am picking out my system and am curious to know what size I can fit in the F/R doors and are there tweeters on the 96-97 SR5? Crutchfield lists 6 3/4 for the front only. TIA. -Stu.

In my 2001 4Runner I have 6.5" components with 1" tweeters on front, but I have only 5" in the rear.

When I tried 5.25" Infinity References, they didn't fit without the dremel tool ...

tweeters

I used pioneer 7/8(22mm) dome tweeters in my door when i blew out the stock ones. I bought them at Car Toys for $50. Install them yourself and save a bunch of money. Use the mountings from the stock one and not the new one its screws right in. The only problem was that they were a little thick and the cover for the tweeters had to be pucjed under the door panel.

I have 6.75" Sony Xplod's in front and in back. I tossed the rear brackets and drill new holes for the speaker, the hole is more than big enough, you just need some sound damper backing and maybe a speaker baffle from crutchfield to make it sound a little better. I don't have either yet, but I just bought some peel-n-stick (6"x25' roll for $10) from Lowes and I'm going to give that a shot for sound damping the doors. if it works and doesn't stink, I'm going to do the whole car. much cheaper than the overpriced dynamat stuff.

I found this link a while back that has sort of interesting info and a on dampening audible noise. The products seem a bit expensive but serve a designed purpose.

Q-->So does the 96 SR5 come with tweeters stock or not?! With my style of music it would be overkill to buy a component setup in the front with the highs being face level already.

I did read somewhere that Infinity Reference didn't fit (depth) too well. I have no problem using my dremmel to get a larger speaker in back. In fact I look for any excuse to use the dremmel like. . . cleaning my teeth and making a smoothie. 5.25 is tiny for a rear speaker. So. . .my choices for the rear doors are:
5.25 drop in (except hole modification)
or
6.5 (6.75 getting balsy) with some cutting and depth is going to be the deciding factor it seems from sschaefer3's page.

I will prolly cut the ish outta the rear door

later -Stu.

I guess the '96's are alot different from the '98's then because my windows open fully and I didn't have to cut any part of the sheet metal to mount my 6.75" sony's. just one new hole drille and a machine screw for mounting, two of the other holes were perfectly postitioned. plus I only used three of the screws because the hole was about 7.75" so the 6.75" speaker wouldn't fill it, which is why I need to make my own bracket, but haven't yet.

Isn't that just like dynamat?
