hey guys ive got a 2nd gen runner i dont currentlly have the rear mount my spare is underneath. but im going prerunner style with my fiberglass fenders baja suspension and 15x8 outlaws with 32" BFG tires i want to show off my spare i want it on the back door. ive seen some 2nd. gen runners with them on there stock where can i get one? if any of you wanna get rid of one lmk. thanks

The ones with the spare on the back have a good deal of structural reinforcement on the mounts, behind the sheetmetal. If you take a carrier off one from e-bay or a junkyard or whatever and just bolt it to your existing sheetmetal it will fall off quickly. Especially if you plan on running high speed rough roads and whoops like pre-running involves.

I'm not sure but I bet its tied into body mounts or the frame somewhere.

Yeah, what Matt said. You're going to have to custom fab something to take the kind of abuse pre running will deliver.

thanks guys i know i was told i have to get the entire rear tail gate wich i dont want to do with all the power windows and different color so im just going to scratch that idea i was considering getting one of the those bed mount units that you can take in and out with codder pins so that i can show it and still use the back of my cargo area:cry:

I'm new to all this. Just bought a 93 4runner. I've removed the spare tire from underneath because it's hanging too low. I want to install a rear swing-arm style mount.

Just how much re-inforcement is necessary? Do you need re-inforcement in the rear door as well, where the latch is?

I've seen a 1990 with a rear swing arm retrofitted on, but not sure how he did it. Has anyone out therre done it? How hard was it?

Neil, I'm not sure exactly whats required to reinforce the areas where the swing away spare mounts.... but think on this. I'll bet that whole set-up, with tire weighs 150 to 175 lbs. If you look for one, I'd try to get all parts from a salvage yard. There has got to be a large backing plate inside the quarter panel, otherwise, that puppy would tear right off from the weight.
I'll be mounting mine in the roof rack. (when I get a rack)

There are plenty of companies with custom rear bumpers that have a tire mount.

Yes, I've found a few companies with aftermarket bumpers that can take the spare tire. They are not cheap though.

I can get a complete oem swing-arm thing for about $100, so if it's not too much trouble to install, I'd rather go that route.

Has anyone installed one before? What was your experience?

I often wonder why they quit putting the spare mounts on the rear. . . maybe the soccer moms got tired of opening the spare gate to put the groceries in the back?

Anyhow, I love the rear spare mount on my '91. It has saved me twice in two separate rear end collisions. The body shop told me the rear gate assembly diverted a lot of the energy from the collisions possibly saving the frame from being bent or the rear quarter panels from damage. In both accidents I was rearended by a full size truck traveling in excess of 35mph. Both times the rear window stayed intact but the tail gate had to be replaced. Amazingly, the gate assembly survived both accidents undamaged!

FYI the factory rear spare mount is very sturdy and it mounts on two large hinges on the right side above and below the right tail light. The tail gate is completely different than those that do not have the rear spare mount (the reverse lights are in a different spot and the gate latch plate is mounted where the license plate normally is.)

I would go for the factory mount if possible, its a pretty sound design.

I visited a wrecker today that has the swingarm assembly. He wants $175 CDN for it (that's $120 USD).

Another option is a premade bumper from Kennessee Mountain Accessories. I emailed them and they do make a version for a 1990-1995 4Runner. By the time ship it here though, it could be like $800 CDN!

I also visited my local welder who is confident he can make something adequate for less money, and I trust him. He's very good.

So now I'm thinking I'll go the whole new bumper route instead. I think trying to re-inforce the body and tailgate to accept the swingarm thing is just too much work and I'm better off with a whole new bumper. There's another thread with excellent photos of one that was made for a guy's 2003 model....I like that one!

there are some really cool bumpers out there with some good write up's on how to copycat someones great Ideas this guy is from San diego and his looks great on his Jeep and just do the measurement changes and why wouldn't it work???
