silverstar ultras review

Well I thought that changing my oem bulbs for something better would give me more light. I thought I would try Sylvania Silverstar Ultras 9003. Well after about a week with driving with them I was not impressed. I did like the different light output but it wasn't very usable. I noticed that darker objects ahead of me were sort of washed out. It seemed as if the light produced actually absorbed instead of reflect. Dark colored asphalt didn't illuminate only the reflective white lines. I thought to myself that it could be a possibility that if a person were to wander onto the roadway wearing dark colored clothing I would not see that person until it was too late. In my honest opinion I believe that standard lighting rather that super "white" light is better for all around performance. I took out the Silverstars and replaced them with my used oem bulbs and found I could see the road so much better. My next venture would be to try GE Nighthawk as they do not have the blue tint on the bulb as see how they perform.

oh great, here we go again with the GE Nighthawk thing. if you look inder the "new posts" tab, you will find a fairly good amount of posts about this over the past few days. as for the Sylvania's, i have the original silverstars, and they ARE brighter and produce more useful light than normal clear bulb, but, that's just my opinion and it may vary from person to person and ride to ride. btw, what type of yota do you have? went with the normal silverstars b/c the "ultra" thing sounder a little to good to be true for such an increase in price. and about the black asphalt thing, pretty much all lighting isn't going to show up as well on these black surfaces, just the way it works.

I've got regular ol Silver Stars in my 4Runner. I got em last year, and they work great.....well, sort of. It's mostly my fault for not aiming them yet.

If you want the brightest bulbs, go with PIAA, yeah they are about 60 to 70 dollars, but they are bright as hell!!!!

I ran a set in of PIAA Xtreme white in the NX and it proved to be pretty bad unless you just want the headlights to look good (as they will look damn good) the light output on dark roads was pretty awful. I switched to the std bulbs but then now that car rarely sees night driving unless its some kind of "midnight" event

For guys that race in any form that requires lighting, PIAA's race line is great but they are usually yellow and $$$$

For total output I have always stayed with the European line as they don't coat the bulbs but instead use alternate gas for color and sake of efficiency

Fo SheeZy, you should mount your V1 higher up on your windshield, you'll pick stuff up sooner that way. I have mine just below and slightly to the left of my rearview. Not only will the V1 pick stuff up sooner; but the display is closer the the center of your vision, so you don't have to shift your focus to see the V1's display.

oh yeah, and the manual reccomends you mount it as high as possible.

V1 = best detector made. Once you drive with the arrows, anything else is scary.

I don't like how any of the ultra white bulbs illuminate (or don't) wet pavement but installing Hella Yellowstar bulbs in my fogs that has really helped.

I've been overall happy with my original Silverstars and they are now been going for over two and a half years and will be upgrading to the Ultrastars as soon as they import the ones that fit my Runner. I haven't seen them anywhere yet.
