Side mirrors on 96-98 4Runner, 99-00 4runner, and 01-02 4Runner, what's different???
Ok, I'm working on have signal mirrors made for 4Runners. The kind that are built flush into the surface of the glass, like on many new vehicles.
I'm trying to find out when the glass changed on the stock mirrors.
From what I'm hearing, 96-98 mirror housing and glass were the same.
For 99-00, the mirror housing changed, but supossedly the glass shape didn't change?
For 01-02 I'm told the glass shape changed, not sure if mirror housing is same shape as 99-00 though.
Can some shed some light on this ormaybe post pics of the housings and mirror glass???

ooo ooo what about us 89-95 truck/runner guys Jason?
Clear lens w/amber LEDs? wait a min. you're talking about those arrows on the glass right? not the lenses in the housing [like Mercedes/Lexus] right?

Jason, how about a heated glass with signals, I'd definitely buy those.

I'd be interested in heated as well. Funny, tonight I noticed a lot of wind noise around my mirrors and was going to start experimenting with aerodynamics to reduce the noise. Anybody make anything already?

Per the Brochures below for '00, '01 & '02, all 4Runners came with heated mirrors:
2000
2001
2002
Could not find a brochure for '99, but here's a quote from J.A.'s website:
SR5 grade level 4Runners now feature as standard heated outside mirrors, built-in map lights in the overhead console and cruise control. In addition, the SR5 model's optional Sports Package has been upgraded to include front and rear color-keyed bumpers with projector fog lamps, fender flares, a new wheel design and a sporty hood scoop. The key there is SR5 grade level. In 2000 the base model w/ a 2.7 was still available and heated mirrors were not standard. I know this for a fact as I owned one for 5 years and would have appreciated those heated mirrors during our long New England winters. Now I have an 02 and I do like the heated mirrors, its a pain to scrape an inch of ice off your mirror without moving it out of position or breaking it.

Same problem here... heated mirrors would be a huge plus... I'd just have to rig a separate switch for them since most trucks don't have the rear defog.

The outside mirrors are linked to the rear defrost. Thus when the rear defrost is activated, the mirrors heat simultaneously. Are you saying that when you activate your rear defrost, your mirrors do not defrost?

I was thinking the EXACT same thing. I think i'll try and get this done before next fall... since i like a good challenge when dealing with electrical stuff i think i'll try and figure out how to wire it into the existing rear defroster switch maybe....

Hey nuts... I was looking at how it might be done here's a link to the factory wiring diagram http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1996/SIL/...i/053rwdmh.pdf
For 89-95 trucks and 4runners tap into the green wire running off #3 of the defog relay with a 10A fuse shown in the middle of this diagram http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...stemci/rwd.pdf
and everything should work... I let you know after I try it myself lol.
Hope this helps everyine

Just looked at the diagram and it looks promising.
Question: Is the timed feature of the rear defogger controlled through the body ecu or the actual [push button] switch?
by the looks of this diagram, the body ecu controls the timed feature. i have to wonder if they integrated this in the 1996?
as far as the sunroof relay/switch controls go between these years, they were completely different. so i wouldn't be surprised if it were different for the defogger, too.
