Question Should I get this rig?

I talked to this kid a couple days ago that said he's selling his 1981 Toyota pickup that has six inches of lift for $500. Well tonight I asked him about it again and then went down to see it. He said it prolly needs an engine and that he has put it through hell while owning it. When I first saw it I figured it has potential but upon closer look its rough. Weve got rust action, poor interior, no tail gate, misalignment of the bed, needs an engine but has a 22R in it. Now he wants $500 and in its condition that seems high. Should I offer $350 as I am willing to offer? I am not looking for something to deck out but simply offroad and not worry bout rolling. What are your thoughts? Oh & BTW it's BLUE!

How's the frame?

All that other crap can be fixed to whatever extent you want it fixed - just a matter of time and money. Have you given thought to how much money you'd be willing to invest in a beater trail rig? Compare that to what it would cost to "fix" it up.

If you are going to make it a trail rig, like jacksonpt said, make sure the frame is still good. If it is rusted through, you will have a lot of extra work!

If the frame is good (usually not an issue away from the salt belt), offer the $350. For a wheeling rig, an '81 makes a decent platform. Swap out the engine for another 22R or a 3.4 or a 4.3 and you're good to go. I'd trash the bed anyway so its issues shouldn't be a problem.

If you're looking for a trail rig offer $350 and swap in a 5mge or 7mge - they bolt in.

$500 sounds a little high, there's an '83 pickup for sale here with a 22R that is needing work going for $550 and there is minimal body work needed and the bed has already been removed and a tube bed has been welded on...so it sounds like your $350 offer would be a good one.

Good luck, and plus...ITS BLUE!

update

Ok I talked to the kids mother that is in charge of the sale. She says she has money invested into new brakes,shocks,33 inch tires, and LMFAO heres the funny part. She says the Smittybult bumper on it is worth $1500 so she wants $800 now. I told her for a rig that runs $800 is fair but that this rig does not run and with the bed damage being off to the drivers side by 2 or 3 inches I wouldnt pay over $500. I told her if the ALLEGED $1500 bumper means so much then take it off and sell it elsewhere. So with all that shes got into it I figure being $800 in tires,$100 in shocks & 150 for the brake job I will give her the $500. It also has my future SAS swap parts and rear leaf conversion parts. So I win either way IMO! Thoughts?

i know toyotas cost twice as much here in washington, but 800 for a beater like that? no way!

i got my '79 for $650. motor is in decent shape(300k), typical cancer on the bedsides, and a big dent on the driver's side. everything else is little stuff. i love 1st gen 4x4s, so it's even better to me

i almost fell out of my chair over the 1500$ ˟˟˟˟tybilt thing, though.

i'd buy it for 300... 800 though? no way

$1,500.00 huh, doubt that. Looks like $264.31! I hate liars. This is even for a winch mount Smittybilt tube bumper. The actual one on the truck is a basic tube bumper with the hoop. Thoughts?

Well upon looking at it it only has a three inch body lift. More lies? Or stupidity? Blue

you don't really even need 6" of lift on a 1st gen. 35s will fit with 2" and some fender trimming

for some reason, toys in washington(and the west coast in general) cost an arm and a leg. for that pickup you paid 600 for, would have sold for 2 grand easily(no motor). they seem to be in pretty high demand

Who needs fender trimming? They rear ones will rust themselves out naturally.

I agree, and a $500 find is decent. The way I look at it is $800 is base for any rig that runs. This rig not running is not worth what she wanted. Glad I talked her back down to what the son wants ($500) but having her take her $1500 ERRR $264 Smittybilt kinda sucks. But hey with having NO bumpers I now have a reason to get into design mode and figure out what i want. So being that the rear has a roll pan is it legal to roll around with no physical bumper? Blue

Talking Cash Purchase Tactics

Ive done this before and regularly do this when at a pawn shop. I will have a much smaller amount of cash in hand visible to the sellers eye. I feel if they see that I have more cash then they will aim high when quoting me the price. Jake thanks, I think I will follow your idea. Blue

I agree 100%

$500 seems decent to me. The question is, do you really need a beater rig that you can 4 wheel and not care about body damage?

Are you considering any other options?

Good luck

Ask your self what your gettin? Are the axles good?, tranny? engine?
Sounds like your getting a tired beat up truck. But at least he is being honest with you.

I love taking Blue up on trail runs but want something I can not worry about rolling and tearing up. Blue is my DD and in prime condition with the exception of some sloppy steering due to wheeling. Project Blue Crawler will be a carefree rig to me. In the future the solid axle sitting under Blue Crawler will be Big Bad Blues solid axle and Blue Crawler will be stripped and parted out but not before I have some fun in it. Blue
