Short 2nd Gen CB install write up w/ pics

I installed a Cobra 19DXIII in my 94 4Runner a couple weeks ago. Had a request for some pics so I thought I'd share with everyone.
This particular CB just happens to fit perfectly in the ash tray opening of the 2nd Gen if you take out both the tray and the bracket it slides into. Don't know if other Cobras are the same dimensions, though.

I haven't figured out how to secure the unit in place. That's why it's a little crooked. I think I'm going to try some foam tape on the top.

Here's how I cut the panel out of the back. Sorry I don't have a pic of the opening before I cut it. I used a hack saw blade. It's a little ugly but it doesn't show anyway. If I had to do it again I'd use a guide of some kind to get a clean line.

Notice I didn't cut the bottom out of the opening. This helps hold the unit in place. Use the CB as a template to mark where to cut.

I also needed a 90 degree elbow to clear the coax in the back without kinking it. Got mine at radio shack for about $4.

You can see in the second pic that I used disconnects for easier removal. I just cut the wires on the CB in half to do this. I used a tap splice to pull power off the cigerette lighter. Only problem with that is you have to have the key on "ACC" to use the CB but at least I won't kill the battery by forgetting to shut it off. The ground I ran to a screw on the structure supporting the dash.
One other thing. There was an unused hole in the fire wall just above and to the right of the gas pedal that I ran my coax through since my antenna will be on my front bumper.
Nothing too difficult here but I'm kind of proud of it. Hope this helps someone else out there.

Sweet--looks a lot like my Uniden

Big Picture
I used 2 big hose clamps to hold mine up-kinda ghetto, but works great.

I recently did the exact same thing. Fits perfrectly. If yer still lookin for something to hold it in there...go back to radio shack and pick up some double lock velcro. that is what I used and my cb ain't goin nowhere. And still allows it to be pulled when needed.

works great! i haven't had any problems what so ever with it, granted, the cb most likely would have stayed in pretty well without it, but maybe not offroad.

Velcro! Why hadn't I thought of that? :pat: I was worried about the foam tape not holding in hot weather and then having that horrible mess to deal with. I'm gonna track down some velcro tomorrow.
I figured other people had done this exact same thing but the search function here won't let you search for a two letter term like CB so I couldn't find any write ups. I suppose this write up will fade away before too long too. Maybe one of us should take the time to do a write up for the tech write up section.

Hey! I did the same thing on my 91' back in 1992. I think it was a Radio Shack CB.
