Can you get the nut started with your fingers?
Once you get that far, put a wratchet up there and let it push against the shock mount. Then you can turn the shock by hand from below to tighten it, and the wrachet braced against the mount will hold the nut still for you.

the shaft of the shock is twisting, get a set of vice grips on it and the nut on the top with tighten down real easy.
are they stock shocks, with the retarded shroud around the top? when i took my stock shocks out i had to bend the outer shoud so i could hold onto it to get the nut off the top end. i was installing new ones tho so i didnt care.

I don't know what kind of shock you are installing, but if you put vice grips on the piston rod shaft and nick the crome it will need to be replaced very soon afterward.
I do have one tip for you. Make real sure you lather up that threaded part with plenty of antiseize compound. That will prevent corrosion and make it much easier to take off the next time.
