Setting up for towing questions
Since I didn't sell my 4runner I am probably going to be doing some towing this summer. It'd be taking my girlfriend's jeep to the trails.
1. Has anyone installed a trailer brake controller on a 3rd gen 4runner? Anyone have recomendations with choosing one? My trailer has trailer brakes so it'd be nice to use them. I don't know much about using a braked trailer.
2. I am thinking about putting the 231mm Tundra brakes up front. Probably get the smallest width spacer, 1/4" - 1/2", I can get to allow for clearance and also run 285s or maybe 305s when I replace the tires.
3. I am thinking of upgrading the suspension but am not sure what springs to use in the rear. I am thinking of doing the Tundra coils up front and the Land Cruiser coils in the rear.
I am thinking of also doing the deckplate mod and at least exhaust to gain a little bit of extra power.
Any other sugestions, other than oil change and basic up keep, for preping for a tow? It's a 98 SR5 4wd with a 5 speed and factory tow package already.

Definitely go with the trailer brake, you'd be silly not to. I tow a 4400# trailer over huge mountain passes and had few issues other than having to take it slow (2nd gear when it got above 6% grade) uphill. I also have a 1997 3.4, 5 spd. 4Runner. Just recently got bigger tires after installing ss#1 lift (tundra coils front/land cruiser coils rear), and kept my stock tires to switch over for when I have to tow my trailer in the summer. If you plan on going 285's or 305's you'll definitely have to consider re-gearing, especially if you live near any mountain passes. Everyone will have varying opinions with regards to putting on tundra brakes, but IMO it's a waste of time and money if you have good/well maintained truck and trailer brakes there shouldn't be any problems. I've had absolutely none and I've done some crazy steep up/down passes. Don't ride the brakes and don't race downhills, you should be fine.
Other than having properly maintained stock 4runner and trailer brakes, stock tires, and fresh oil/lube you shouldn't have an issue towing the jeep. If you plan on wheeling with the jeep and getting bigger than stock tires I'd definitely consider regearing or you'll be going up the hills in 1st gear. Good luck; my 2cents.
