Service Manual on CD
Hi all;
Based on the thread about service manuals on eBay, I did some wandering and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2405298023
David (Yoda) had thought that someone here had bought this CD and suggested that I start a new thread to ask about it.
Looking at the guy's recent eBay history there are a couple of people that are saying it's all text, it's a dupe of copyrighted material, it's worse than Chilton's... etc. So, I wrote him with these questions:
and got this response:
So I dunno what to think... While I think that paper is better, for $36 this might be worthwhile as a supplement if it really is the FSM on disc.
Any thoughts? Does anyone have first-hand experience with this guy's offerings? He's selling a number of variations...
Thanks!
Mark

I'm quite interested in the CD, but I'm wondering a bit about how it's organized...
- Are these HTML files with embedded images? Or are they PDF's?
- If they're PDFs, then are they searchable?
- What's the original source of the material? Is it a collection of stuff from around the 'net or are they scans of the factorty service manuals?
- Are you the publisher of the CD, or is it a 3rd party that you're reselling for?

Hi,
This is the original factory repair manual put on cd in pdf format in over 80 files with over 1500 pages of comprehensive information and hundreds of diagrams and illustrations.
This manual covers about 98% of all electrical and mechanical aspects of the vehicle.
Thanks
Ron

cd's
i went to the dealer to get some small parts for my truck..he was using the cd to find it and i got to look at how it was laid out for my 4runner.....its detailed, concise, and easy to use...if the one on ebay is the same i think its a great deal. I would rather have th cd than the book anyday. it also has part numbers for small hard to find things.

My father in law bought me a Honda Accord "Service Manual" on ebay for Christmas.
I kid you not, the ENTIRE original was copied and bound in a cheap brass binder.
Yeah, that's legal. :eek:
I would be skeptical of anything. No experience with the CD service manuals though...

I work at a printing company & could easily print out an infinite number of books from the cd. is it legal?? not if i were making money off it? but first you have to find out if the transaction from manual to pdf to cd was legal? but if i were in a 4runner club, id just have every one antae-up for just the cd and everyone gets hardcopies. or you could just burn the cd. but i wouldnt break the law or anything like that.

I personally wouldn't buy from that person judging from their 50 Negative Feedbacks.
Corey posted a link a while back to a 2nd Gen one that a member had gotten from E-Bay, so this may give you some idea of what it will probably be like, here's the link... 2nd Gen Service Manual on CD
I'd try and find someone else selling it with less negative feedback. Just my thoughts.

Hey all;
It looks like I'm gonna get some first-hand experience with the '96 Limited CD that's out and about. I should be able to have a look in a couple of days. I'll let ya' know what it like.

I got a look at the Service Manual CD today. It's made up of 105 PDF files comprising about 49meg of disk space.
This is the directory (files sizes in bytes and file names):
All of the PDFs are in text mode, and are searchable as such. There are thumbnails, but no bookmarks. There is no master index per se'.
The only source statement I've found is one in the "How to use system wiring diagrams" PDF which says:
The PDF properties don't give any clues either, just saying that Ghostscript was used to generate them back in July of 2002.
(btw, the wiring diagrams are VERY clear and so far have checked out to be accurate for my truck)
I've never seen a real FSM, so I don't know if that's what this really is or not. I'm thinking _not_.
"Executive Summary": I think it's worthwhile to have as a reference and the price is tough to beat, but paper is handier overall.

Mark,
Here's experience talkin' to ya:
I bought this cd-rom for my 98 and it really sucks the big one. I bought the real Field Service Manuals (yes, the real manuals that the dealer uses) and there is NO comparison. I cannot even believe this guy claims that they are equivalent.
Save your money, splurge and get the real deal.
Bob

Hi Bob;
Thank you. I know you're right.
fwiw, Looking back over this thread, the link that Braden (91Runner) posted a couple of messages above is very much the same CD that I saw today though seemingly tweaked for the 2nd gens.
Thank you. I know you're right.
