yeah this happens to me to. When there is even a little snow/frost I go into "4wd" actually all wheel. I have almost gotten into a few accidents because of this stopping power to the wheels pulling onto a busy road.
My guess is it would only be 4Runners with the multi-mode four wheel drive that have the vsc and vtrac. I think its an overly reactive vtrac. I have learned to hate it and the gas milage that comes with it. How would I be able to contact Toyota without going the 15 miles to the stealership?

Now I'm getting a little scared with this and I also saw a thread about frame rot on 4Runners too. I better go check ...

I finally got around to filing a complaint with the nhtsa.gov a week or two before this recall was announced. Figured with all the Toyota recalls lately they might actually take my complaint seriously. TRAC is one flippin' dangerous system on the 01-02 4Runners. The only way Toyota would ever address our vehicles is if enough 4Runner owners file complaints with the nhtsa.
Here's the link: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm I filed under the Traction Control System option, not the Vehicle Stability Control. Last edited by bootown; 05-03-2010 at 05:58 PM. |

In Canada there is a toll free number: 1-888-TOYOTA8. I like the idea of reporting to the relevant government agency as well though. They will ask you if you have had the dealer try to repair the issue.
I'm not willing to pay the diagnostic fees for them to either say there is nothing wrong or that they can't fix it (maybe they'd replace the VSC computer at a huge cost to me, and I'd have the same problem). Anyone that has taken their truck to the dealer for this problem and that has not had it resolved should definately call... As far as Traction control vs. Vehicle stability control, I know for a fact that the loss of engine power is caused by the VSC system - I can turn my VSC off and TRAC by itself applies brakes under some circumstances but never de-throttles. Correct. VSC is the culprit for de-throttling the engine...not TRAC.
