Scuba Tank
Does anybody know if a SCUBA tank could be converted to use as an on board air compressor? How would this be achieved and how well would it work? I performed a search but didnt find any details as in set up/ capaccity, how many tires could it fill and how quickly. Thanks for any input

I have this setup....works fantastic.....I can fill 20 tires-4 from 15 to 35 psi in 10 min -its quiet and efficient- the whole setup ran approx 300...the only downfall is that most scuba shops will require a certified diving card to fill the tank for you, they dont want a amature going out and killing themselves trying to dive without certification. I extablished a relationship with a local shop that knows I only use it for airing up tires..the danger factor is there- but divers have been jostling these tanks for decades in the back of trucks/boats etc..Very few accidents have occured- the real danger is in filling -thats why its done behind a brick wall!

Fow way less than $300 you can also set up a much much safer C02 system with a 20lb tank and have much more air with out the high preasure.. I paid $55 for my tank, and about $75 for hoses and a regulator.. I can get it filled for just over $10 anywhere... Be safe, a scuba tank can be a missle .. You are talking 4500 psi there if I remember corectly

i have friends at the local dive shop and for ten bucks the repair guy screwed a valve inflator onto my old regulator. its completely safe for the back of your car as long as its not rolling around like crazy, (its only 3000psi) a bungge or two is all the protection you need (for the extremely nurotic you can just point that valve towards you so if it blows the thing flies the other way). Its the best solution fo rsomeone with certification and a tank and reg, but to buy a tank reg and have a valve put on is a waste compared to a co2 or compressor.

From the beverage factory, you can get a 15 lb tank and reg for about $140. then add a little extra for hoses fitting etc. that doesnt sound like a bad deal at all.

Wow that's a great deal and they are aluminum tanks too. Much lighter than the steel ones. With a carry handle too.

Heres some more info should you decide to go this way...
Compleate setup
'first stage' regulator - outlet set at 125psi
Pony gauge reads 3000psi full 75 cf of air in tank...at 1000 psi I have approx. 5 fills left
Quick disconnects
