School me on the 96 4Runner
I just picked up a bone stock 96 Runner 163,000 on the OD. 3.4 automatic SR5
My goal is to build a competent rig for all occasions.
At this point I have some parts from my last build that I would like to use;
23 spline chrome molly 4.7 geared tcase
Rock Assault housing front with 5:29's and ARB"s with Bobby long chrome Molly axle shafts and Cryoed hub gears. Six Stud knuckles and hydro assist.
Rock Assault housing Rear with 5:29's and ARB"s with chrome molly axle shafts'
36" tires with Staun Beadlocks .
Things that I am using from the current truck;
The engine (of course)
The Automatic Transmission
And so here is where my questions start. I know I can get an adapter for the Auto to gear case from Inchworm, so that should be good, but I don't know much about the stock suspension mods that can be done.
I realize that the front is a total rebuild. I will probably go with some custom leaf springs with some good shocks and air bumps.
What can I reuse if any of the rear suspension to fit the 36" tires? I know there are other coil set ups, but can you get any articulation out of the Control arms and will the stock brackets hold up to a longer control arm?
I am willing to set up the rear as I have done the front, but just exploring my options for now.
As I said I want to be able to go cross country or be able to run the softer line on rock crawling trails, so any info and experiences you have would help.
I am no stranger to building trucks, but most of them have been the buggy sort and I am wanting to do more camping and exploring with my wife these days hence the new build.
