Scary pull under hard braking

So I'm enjoying a nice Friday afternoon drive home and when I look up traffic is stopped in front of me. It turns out the EXPLODER in front of me had no brake lights!

Anyway, I hit the brakes hard enough to lock the fronts for a second and it really pulled hard to the left. The back stayed on track, I guess because of the ABS. I let off the brakes, corrected with about a quarter turn to the right and got it stopped in time, but it scared the ˟˟˟˟˟ out of me.

So the question is what would cause it to turn that hard in that situation? I need to test it under more controlled circumstances but some tips for where to start looking would be cool.

Thanks

Check for a stuck caliper.

YUP sounds like you have a stuck piston in one of your calipers. I recently replaces my calipers because of this.

So wouldn't it be the right caliper that is not working if it pulls left? that would be scary. I had the same thing happen to me when driving a company transporter. That thing had a 26,000 pound rating. Big honking truck to try and control. I know the feeling. Hope you get it fixed up. Ben

Could also be contaminated brake material, a low tire or even one of the rear drums not functioning correctly. Brake problems suck.

Thanks, guys.

I should have mentioned I replaced the rotors and pads about 6 months ago and tires about 2000 miles ago. Also, I jumped the brakes a few times yesterday afternoon and was able to free what must have been a stuck open right caliper.

Brake problems definitely suck, but I think this one has been solved.

Thanks again for the help.
