Saggy Butt Syndrome. New Shocks?

Well about a week ago I bought a $1200 exhaust for the 4runner. Two days ago, while on a trip to the mountains, we heard knocking from the rear. I looked under to find that the rear axle had been taking chunks out of my brand new pipes. Doesn't make sense, wasn't weighted down enough (only had 2 adults in the back) so the only thing I can think of is that the shocks/springs have softened up.

My question is, what springs would you all recommend as a replacement? I want something a little more heavy duty if possible because I tow a lot. Also, I'd like to maybe set the brick work for a possible lift in the future...

I've been looking around and I have a few options already, I just wanted to get some opinions before I move on anything.

Shocks do nothing for ride height. You need different springs. Your best bet, in my opinion, is a set of Old Man Emu's medium rate springs and a set of their Nitrocharger shocks.

They work great, give you a higher back end, and will allow a slightly higher load carrying capacity.

If you can live with the rake you can grab a set of OME890's for the rear and then work on the front. I personally prefer to do it all at once but, granted it can get expensive. Either way 890's are probably going to suit you best. If you really tow alot then 891's. checkout sonoransteel.com

2nd the OME suggestion. I'm running 906s out back and I think they are perfect.

I wouldnt' recommend them if you are constantly hauling 300lbs of gear around... but they are great for my weekend trips when the truck is loaded up with stuff.

I think I'm still in shock of a $1200 exhaust.

For $1200 you could have gotten a solid catback system and replaced the suspension with "the best the factory had to offer" ('99 coils/shocks) from Sonoran.

Yeah, but my exhaust had something like 4 holes in it. The manifold, the cat was collapsed, the muffler had a hole, and somewhere along the pipe. Got the Dorman exhaust manifold, increased pipe size to 2.25" from 2" put in a magnaflow cat and a flowmaster exhaust.

Would I have loved a lift and to replace these mommy steps with rocksliders? You betcha, but hell I can smoke these tires like nobody's business now.

Had roughly that much money left over after the accident anyways (reason why I got a 4runner)

The stock exhaust should have been 2.25" not 2" to begin with unless someone make the mistake of downgrading it at somepoint. Toytec.com is another place you can get a decent deal on a lift.

I really liked my ome lift I had on my 97 4runner with the heavy duty springs I could put anything I wanted in the back and it never sagged, it also towed really well with those springs. http://www.gentryoffroad.com/php/gen...uctreview/ome/
I would take your 4runner back to the place that did you exhaust and tell them to fix it. You suspension should be able to fully travel up and down with out hitting the exhaust, even bottomed out.

Oh, I did take it back. They asked me if I had been "Dukes of Hazarding" it. They fixed it free of charge after the owner and 2 mechanics tried jumping on my hitch receiver.

Which normally would be the case. In my old Honda I was known for jumping train tracks.

And I thought the exhaust for the 4cyl was only 2in. I never measured it, but I thought I read on here that it was and kind of just took it for what it was.

And Whokrz I saw that site last night. Ive been studying it ever since. Is it yours?

4Runners are notorious for "saggy butt" syndrome. I recently noticed my 01 was riding REALLY rough so I looked under the back and it was literally sitting on the bump stops. I guess 230K miles with 400lb of tools in the back took its toll. I went with the OME 891s and it rides like a big Cadillac car now compared to how it was with the bottomed out springs.

It is everyones, I just program it and try to keep it organized. If it was not for people taking the time to submit trails and put up with my dumb questions it would only have the 30 some trails I documented. Currently we have 60+. If you end up taking your 4runner off road and take pictures I would be happy to post a review even if there is already a review for it. Having multiple reviews gives people a better idea of what it is like.
