My 89 pickup 22RE will run on starting fluid, but without it it will start up and shut off. My guess is the fuel pump. Any suggestions? The electronics are fine--I checked everything.

was getting 34 pounds but shop manual calls for 38-44. Replaced the fuel pump and ignition switch. Still starts up and shuts off. Have a Snap On scanner and it is not picking anything up. No check engine light. I am guessing it is a loose wire or bad ground--you know something stupid I am over looking. Between the ignition switch and fuel pump I am in the hole $230. So I am going to have it towed to a shop soon.

Check all of the vaccum lines and make sure the air intake plumbing is tight.
Starting fluid is probably cheaper than gas anymore anyway-just use it!

At what point are you checking the fuel pressure; before or after the fuel rail?
It sounds like either your injectors aren't firing or the fuel isn't getting to them. In the morass of web wheeling info, I've heard too that a problem with the fuel return line to the tank could result in too much line pressure and the engine won't run.
Have you checked the TPS? I think if it isn't sending a signal the injectors don't fire.

I checked for fuel just before the filter. It is a new filter by the way. I changed the fuel pressure regulator with a spare one I had. I can feel the fuel running through the return line. I ordered a new EFI main relay. I have an extra from my old yota one of them doesn't work at all-I mean it won't even fire up and shut down on that relay. The other one you can hear it click, but it gets hot after a few times trying to start the truck. I am thinking that might be it. I used the Snap On code scanner and no codes come up but the troubleshooter points me to the EFI main relay.
