Reseting computer after new parts?

Hey,
I am about to install a new MAF sensor... after putting this in, should I disconnect the battery for alittle and allow the computer to reset with the new sensor, or should I just let the truck figure it out itself by leaving the battery connected?

Thanks!!!

It's won't hurt to disconnect it. Most instructions tell you to do that as a first step when doing any kind of maintenance under the hood.

I would disconnect the negative battery terminal while you install it.

Then if you want to be sure that it reset, pull your EFI fuse for about 15 minutes - everybody will have a different amount of time they pull it for.

Glad to hear you got a new one, I hope your CEL goes away for good!

Yeah, I plan on doing both the 4WD front diff sensor and the MAF... Keep ya posted on the progress...

Would holding the positive and negative wires together for about 20 seconds reset everything too ????

I'd just stick with pulling the fuse or unplugging the battery cable.

Well your CEL will stay off but everything else will too so that's not the best idea. Actaully if the wires are disconnected in theroy it shouldn't do anything at all as long as there's no juice.

As stated before, you should unhook your battery anyways before performing any maintance. I know I am lazy and don't sometimes but if you're messing with the electrical it's a must.

If you can't get it to go off that way go to AutoZone and ask to use one of the checkers and clear the code out of the computer.

Edit: Sorry I was thinking about crossing the power wires. NM

I think ROOF is talking about how to reset the ECU after the new MAF is in.
Not so much how to clear the CEL, he's already done that IIRC.

No, you wouldn't fry anything by touching the power wires together.
Really the ony way you might fry something is if you arc'd across the two battery terminals while they were connected.

Well, good news. The new MAF seems to be doing the trick. No hesitation anymore and no CEL !!! I will take it to work tomorrow (40 miles one way on I-95). Hopefully my MPG will increase too.

Bad news is, my 4WD is still out. I swaped out the front diff actuator and still nothing.... 4wd light is flashing all of the time still...but no action.

Odd. What do you plan on trying next?
