I'm looking at a used taco this weekend and am curious if its an easy job to replace the clutch on these trucks and where the best place for a clutch would be?

not too hard from what i hear.

myself and a few other buddies have gotten the asco/aisin clutch kit from ebay. eclutchmaster.com is the seller. about $190 delivered.

It is possible to replace the clutch if you are willing to put in the time and effort. I did it on mine with the help of a friend, a Haynes manual, and a rented tranny jack. You will need a lot of 1/2" drive extensions and a u-joint, DEFINITELY rent or buy a tranny jack, and DEFINITELY use the safety chains or put on your own strap to hold it to the jack. A friend with long scrawny arms helps too, haha. You will need a torque wrench and a pilot bearing puller makes the job easier, also get some locktight, if you don't have the first two, borrow them from an Autozone type place. The first time we did mine it took us two full days, probably 20 hours total, but neither of us had ever done it before. We did his a month or so ago and had it done easily within one day. For the price to have someone else do it, it is worth it to do it yourself, even if it takes two days.
A couple peices of advice, use a second jack under the xfer case to level the tranny as necessary. It has to be perfectly straight to pull out of the pilot bearing and to go back in. Also, make sure you pay attention to how the throw out bearing is installed, a couple people have put the new one in backwards, the job is not so fun that you want to do it twice, trust me on that!

I got an OEM Asco/Aisin clutch kit from ebay, eclutchmaster also, the price was right and it has everything but the flywheel, which you will either need to pull out and have resurfaced or just buy a new one, I think it cost me $50 at Advanced Auto.

I actually did this by myself on my 85 toy about 10 years ago when I was 17. It took me a couple of days, but it wasn't too bad. I just used a huge floor jack to drop the manual tranny. It was well worth learning how to do.
