Repair Manual Question

Since Haynes and Chilton don't have a repair manual for the 2001 4Runner, will the 2000 manual be fine for any repairs? I saw one at the bookstore and was going to pick it up.

Go for the factory service manual (FSM). Yes it is a lot more $ but you can sell it on e-bay for a lot more $ too when you sell your vehicle later. Don't go to the dealer though, there is an 800 number I saw somewhere that sells the FSM for a lot cheaper than the dealer. Might try e-bay for them too.

I think I remember seeing FSM for sale by one of the vendors listed on YotaTech for around $90 apiece (Vol. 1 & 2). Does anyone know what the different volumes contain and if I only need one over the other?

With mine one volume is the engine and transmision and the other is everything else. I got a used set on e-bay for $89 for both volumes (93 truck). The newer models maybe harder to find though.

1-800-622-2033 outside California

I have a Haynes for the 1996-2000 Trucks and 4Runners. It sucks. I'm still looking for a FSM for somethign less than the $275 the set will cost at a dealer...

Roadrunner,

As I've learned from experience, buy the best that you can afford. Buying cheap will get you cheap. Here's a good relevant example:

1) I purchased this ebay cd-rom that supposedly is the FSM manual. Let me tell you, its not even close. Even Chilton's beats that POS out. $ wasted = $15 or so bucks

2) Haynes manual = can't remember but was wasted money

3) A member here sold me his FSM manuals (all 3) for a good price. I got lucky. And there's no way that #1 and #2 above even holds a candle to the real deal.

My recommendation is to search ebay, locate someone who is selling FSMs and then PM the guy and ask him if he can source your 4runner year.

Bob

2001 4Runner FSM Info

Volume 1: Maintenance, Preparations, Specifications, Diagnostics
Material Number: 0040-RM796-U1
Price: $82.95

Volume 2: Engine, Chassis, Body, Electrical
Material Number: 0040-RM796-U2
Price: $103.95

-I want to say there is a vol 3 that has all the wiring diagrams. I didn't get it because I am an electrical idiot and I would probably end up hurting myself.
