Repacking front wheel bearings on a '98 Taco: How difficult?

Hey guys,

I have a '98 Tacoma 4x4 with manual hubs, which I just took in for its 120,000 mile service. I believe it is time for the front wheel bearings to be repacked. I searched and found this thread:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/wheel-bearings-10394/

which implies that it is a simple job (like half an hour for each wheel), but my mechanic told me it's a big PITA just to get in there and see if they need to be repacked, and the whole job would have set me back about $275.

How difficult of a job is this? If anyone has done it on a similar Taco or 4Runner and can offer a testimonial, that would be great. If it really is easy I'll do it myself; otherwise I'll farm it out. TIA

They are sealed unit bearings and have to be totally replaced when they get play or wear out. They have to be pressed out of the spindle which is prob. the PITA that your technician is talking about. I know cuz I just replaced both of mine on my 2000 4x4 w/ manual hubs. Not a fun job, but def. doable if you hve some balls, guts, and a big press. Hope this helps.

Well, I've got balls and guts but no big press, so I guess it'll go to the mechanic next month. Thanks TACOKRAWL!
