Removing metal door edge protectors?

Today I took a big chuck of paint of the DS door edge protector(I think that's what they are called). So now I want to remove all of them and repaint them. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove them with out messing up the painted door underneath and how to do that. I have been searching allover and all I can find is people selling them.

If it makes a difference, they are OEM.

Thanks,
Brian

Could really use some help. I don't want to have to just try taking them off and see what happens.

We used to buy big rolls of that stuff at the dealership I worked for and install it on customer's cars if they wanted it. It wasn't a Toyota dealership, but none of the new vehicles from the factory ever came with that stuff installed, it was an add on that we would do for the customer if requested. It came in chrome or black, but I have seen some people's cars with it painted to match the car. I figured that unless it was the black rubbery stuff, it was really a waste to have the chrome or painted since it was designed to protect against impacts when the doors were opened and naturally it would get messed up doing it's job. Looks nice though.

As for removing, the stuff we had just had some adhesive on the back that stuck to the door. If yours is metal, see if it's bent a little around the lip of the door and carefully pull it away, or maybe get some adhesive remover to soften the adhesive on it. If it's metal, it might distort when you try to remove it from the door, you might just look into buying some new stuff from your local auto parts store and cut it to fit.
