Removing Gauge Needles

I am wanting to take my tach and speedo needles off for a project. I noticed that there are stops at the bottom of each gauge. I am worried that if I remove the needles the little pin that the needles sits on will turn and I will lose my calibration. Anyone ever removed the needles and have any tips?

I did once on my old Dodge Ram. Completely screwed the gauges up. Had to have a friend drive next to me at 30 MPH, then I pressed the needle back on. I would assume the Toyota gauges also have some sort of preload on them to, hence the stops.

yeah that's what I was worried about. I have heard of running the vehicle and until it stabilizes and RPM temp etc. Make note then replace them in the same place. I think this would work for the tach but the speedo would be off. Damn

just wear gloves as the black surface with the number on it will absorb the oils from your skin, an leave big dirty finger prints every where, and cleaners will discolor/damage the black surface.

the needles just pull off, take care and make sue you pull evenly, gently,
remove at zero and place back on zero. i personally have never had a problem

i dont know if you have a Manuel or electronic speedo drive,

also if you are worried about preload, just lift the needle up enough to clear the stop with out removing the needle, if it falls behind the stop then take note, but i am sure from the one's i have done that they will not fall sweet f.a past the stop.

I am curious as to the project you are doing that would require you to remove the needles? Doing some custom painting? If it is installing new gauge faces, you can do it without removing the needles. I installed my white/silver faces without having to remove the needles, just takes some carful moving/lifting. Good luck
