loosen with citrus-based adhesive remover. 3m sells a product that is specifically for this purpose too

heat with heat gun but dont overheat paint

waxed dental floss is safest. better than fishing monofiliament b/c fishing mono burns.

Oh yeah I forgot about that option Bob. I think I was leary of how long it would last and having to go through the whole process again. But from that article the factory ones are deffinately more than Im willing to spend.

If you don't have a heat gun a good ol hair drier works too! Goof off works pretty well also to loosen/get the gummy stuff off after you take the emblem off. One thing not to forget though! Be sure to put some fresh wax over the places that the "remover" whatever you use comes in contact with because it removes wax! Lucky dog! My truck came with the gold package Oh yeah! depends on what year you have as to what has holes or not. I'm unlucky enough to have a 98 where the "4Runner" in the middle part is drilled in and I ahve to get a different liscense plate surround to get rid of that one. All the others should come right off! If you have a 99+ your in the clear. Don't know about 2nd gens...

oop, just read you have a 96. I do believe your stuck with the "4Runner" in the center unless you don't mind having two holes in the back of your truck. You could plug them, but I guess it depends how bad you want it off...

I can testify that Bob's method works and lasts... I've had mine since the beginning of summer and other than a chip from a stray rock, all is good.

Remember: patience is key when painting them.

okay i got tehm off ebay for 50 bucks shipped to my door. all my emblems were kinda pitted anyways and i love the black pealr look. so on the 4runner i can take it out and put the black pealr emblem in their?? cool thanks

its been over a year since I've applied the paint and not a single nick or chip. however, the front emblem has been hit by some stones and that has chipped. nothing you could do about that!

After lurking here for awhile, I have question. I'd also like to think everyone for all of the great info on the forum.

I have a black 1998 SR5 with gold emblems and have received a set of black pearl SR5 emblems that I won on ebay for $51. I will be able to replace all of the emblems except for the one for the grill. It is too big, so I think I will use Bob's great instructions and redo the existing emblem myself. Question is, what is the best way to remove the emblem from the grill. It seems like it is inset into the grill and I don't want to damage the grill getting it out. Is it secured using pins? I also have to paint the antenna nut, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

okay so i know how to get the ones off. (i took the sr5 one off when i got the truck) its the toyota symbol on the trunk and the 4runner on the license plate frame that need to be removed and if i am not mistaken are held on by pins of some sort. also once you remove the badges can they be replaced (the new black pearl 4runner one might be taken off in a while to have the piece repainted)
